A collaborative effort from ANTI-MASS residents; @turkana_ss , @authenticallyplastic and @nsasi_ug. DOXA emerged from a year of group experiments & listening sessions between the three artists. It reflects their common interest in shaking up traditional forms, techniques & palettes; exploring them in all directions, discovering new tensions in familiar methods, always with an eye towards the alien & disorienting. The opening track “Galiba” takes its inspiration from “Kadodi”, the male circumcision ritual from Eastern Uganda, and “Baksimba”, a royal dance from the Buganda region, and reconstructs them through a decidedly perverse lens.

A newfound affinity for the music of the Diaspora also serves as a motor for these collaborative experiments. Authentically Plastic recently spoke to Borshch Magazine about:

“discovering the ghost of one genre in the other…all the industrial potentials of Gqom waiting to be actualised, and all those 'Gqom tendencies' in Industrial & Noise that usually go unnoticed. It has nothing to do with merging, or combining, but gliding; drawing a line between the two that is an expression in its own right."

The lead single “Diesel Femme” draws from Turkana & Authentically Plastic’s interest in Techno, Industrial & Gqom; making connections between these disparate worlds. Nsasi’s playful solo track brings to mind the loose arrangements of Chicago House, just as much as it does the polyrhythmic percussion of their culture. There’s an undeniable joy here, that comes from assembling sounds or phenomena that have nothing to do with each other, stacking them, stretching them, distorting them; sometimes beyond recognition, and other times accidentally arriving at something vaguely familiar. This openness to unpredictability is generally fuelled by Kampala’s young, but thriving underground music scene; as well as the resilient, queer friendships that have emerged from this small collective; its ethics of care & mutual support.

Angel-Ho the Musician and Creative Director have created a third album titled ‘A Time To Die’. The album is an entendre for the depression of covid-19 not being able to perform and living in survival as an artist while the other meaning to the artist is making the moment a celebration as 
a time to gag at their abstract take on Club & Pop music. Having created Death Becomes Her in 2019, a more political statement using their vocals as a means in her quest to dislodge gender binaries and power hierarchies, Angel-Ho challenges this even further to make disruption in the perceptions of doubt on their artistry. 
Angel-Ho puts in what they enjoy most listening to bird sounds and is inspired by their pitch change as an influence by nature, in hopes of making peace in her music and mind. She has pushed herself into unfamiliar territory distorting the genres to find resolution in music production. Having taken a year to collaborate with producers she found herself trading her authenticity and feeling somewhat far removed from the body of the music, to simply lay vocals over a beat was not enough for her direction. Prettybwoy’s debut is entitled Tayutau ( 揺蕩う), a traditional Japanese term often used in haiku and literature, meaning ‘waver’ - a state of indecisiveness, to lose determination or purpose, often temporarily, or to drift or sway to and fro. Made over the last two years whilst dealing with isolation, job loss, burnt hard-drives and almost losing the whole project, the album has seen several phases and degrees of anxiety, uncertainty, hope and frustration.

‘Too many things have changed since starting to make this album, and I think that is reflected in the production. The album can be split into three parts – tracks I made before the pandemic when things felt stable, tracks made during lockdown in isolation, and tracks made during the cautious and conflicted opening up and the lead up to the Olympics. There has been so much confusion and changes back and forth, but I want to have hope and try to keep focused, which at times hasn't been easy’

As well as drawing from external causes, 'Tayutau' also comes from a place of internal uncertainty.

'This is a trip in search of my new identity, or maybe to understand my current one. I am Japanese, living in Japan, but my music is only released by labels from other countries. I am a member of SVBKVLT (China), and also Polaar (France), but where or who am I in Japan?’

Tayutau is a 10 track album, featuring two vocal appearances from lIlI and a collaboration with Primula, and comes with artwork and video from Wang Jingxin. A separate EP of remixes will be released shortly after the album.
