Pianist-composer An-Ting 安婷 releases her first original piano album, Songs From My Room, which documents, through her compositions, the complex feelings of the pandemic times from her room in London Old Street.

During Lockdown, An-Ting put her feelings into her music in her room in London Old Street. The pieces she created on the piano were like a diary where she kept track of the pandemic time. Starting from ‘London Night’ in March 2020, where it was the first time An-Ting felt about a quiet and calm London. The feeling of being in the ‘Plague Time’ became strong in April. 

In May, An-Ting starts to entertain herself by playing the piano with many ping pong balls inside and thus creating a fun rag-time piece ‘Ping Pong Dance’ (See the video of ping pong balls dancing inside of the piano)

‘Last June’ came out of An-Ting’s fingers when the situation did not get any better after a three-month lockdown, mixing the feelings from BlackLivesMatter. The future of the world is like an enigma, not knowing where to go. In July, first released from the lockdown, An-Ting dances on ‘Hoxton Street’, followed by ‘past time’ when she broke up with her ex-boyfriend in August. 

An-Ting composed Purple Dream in September 2020, when the new lockdown was about to begin. The on/off isolation of the lockdowns was removing the certainties of our old lives and leaving us physically restricted. Yet the retreat from normality allowed space for new dreams and magic to flourish. A space in the quiet, away from the world, and along with it, a new feeling of freedom.

I created five musical loops and put them in different positions in the 3D space. The loops can be randomly combined in any way at any time. It was originally composed for AR in Unity and this track was rendered through Envelop in Ableton. AR app: Augmented Chinatown 2.0 (available in AppStore)

By the Sea was composed during lockdown in 2020 when I played the piano with an imagined string quartet (the string quartet is synthesised by midi instruments in this track).

This is a part of my 'Bird Catalogue' project where the music features the sound of Japanese Bush Warbler. The music was created with inspiration from the performance artist Xie Rong  (https://www.echomorgan.com/) and movement artist Masumi Saito (https://www.masumisaito.com/).

"Silver Stream 銀流" is my new single, a captivating electronic composition that fuses Neo-Classical and Avant-Garde styles. Drawing inspiration from the profound emptiness in Buddhism and the scenic beauty of Chinese landscape paintings (山水畫 shānshuǐ huà), this innovative piece invites contemplation on whether it's a tangible exploration or a voyage of the mind. The electronic soundscape, rich with ethereal tones, blurs the lines between reality and the surreal, creating a dreamlike atmosphere.

I collect field recordings of birdsongs during my travels, exploring the sounds of nature as part of my Lost Communications 失絡之聲 project. The sounds for this piece were recorded in the mountains of Mongolia, where reindeer people live. It is one of the most undisturbed mountains I have ever visited. While there, I encountered a willow tit and was alerted by a woodpecker at the mountain's peak. Additionally, I recorded the flowing sound of pure water and the crackling of fire, as lighting fires was essential for survival when I stayed in a tent with some nomads there.

At Severnake Forest in Wiltshire, I recorded the songs of a wren at dawn. In this piece, I utilised the pure songs of the wren as melodies throughout. The only alterations I made were adjusting the pitch of some songs and adding a delay effect. I was amazed by how lowering the pitch revealed the intricate syllables in their songs. Their language is complex, surpassing what humans can imagine sound to be.

In Hong Kong, I was overwhelmed by the stress and the noise among the dense city. Despite the cacophony of urban sounds, the birds remained lively and cheerful, offering the busy city a glimpse of natural beauty. I managed to switch my perspective and appreciated the beautiful people and birds surviving in this tough environment (everywhere has its challenges, Hong Kong just has more obvious ones). I recorded the birdsongs and other urban and natural sounds in Hong Kong, celebrating the coexistence of nature and the city.

I collect field recordings of birdsongs during my travels, exploring the sounds of nature as part of my Lost Communications 失絡之聲 project. While in the small mountain of Wolong in Sichuan province, China, I encountered one of the most diverse arrays of birds I have ever experienced on a single mountain. I recorded numerous bird species, assigning the melodious Red-whiskered Bulbul as the lead singer. I drew inspiration from Sichuan opera to structure the piece, weaving the birdsongs together with musical elements from this traditional art form.

For this particular piece, I found myself surrounded by over ten ancient Taiwan Cypress trees in the middle of the Smangus mountain in Taiwan. There, beside a gentle stream, I recorded the soft patter of light rain. In that moment, I felt a sense of connection and serenity, as if I could remain there forever, listening to the sounds. As I returned from the  forest, I encountered a flock of Taiwan Yuhina birds and captured their melodies as well. These encounters and experiences are woven into the fabric of this track, conveying the essence and allure of the Taiwan forest.

At Severnake Forest in Wiltshire, I recorded the sounds of deer and chiffchaff at dawn. Initially, I mistook the low, roaming sound of the deer for something else, unaware of its origin in the quiet morning forest. Following the cheerful chirping of the chiffchaff, I discovered them perched in a tree. Intrigued by their playful rhythm, I incorporated it into a lively musical composition, with the main melody inspired by the majestic sound of the deer.

I first heard its song while venturing deeper into Severnake Forest in Wiltshire on a rainy day. Perched atop a tree beside me, it sang a captivating melody that left me spellbound. From that moment, my journey to capture the essence of nature's sounds began. I recorded its song and applied effects to evoke the enchanting feeling I experienced that day in this track.

"The Shore (Sheringham)" is the first piece from my music journal project—where I compose using first-order ambisonic recordings of natural soundscapes captured during my travels. This spatial composition embodies the sea’s raw power through Sheringham’s overwhelming coastal soundscape.

The Azores Blackbird sang at dawn in the Pico Island. Their song is a bit melancholic and full of expression. At first, I thought it was the same as the blackbirds I knew from the UK, but listening closely, I realised it’s a unique subspecies with its own song. This piece is built around that moment of discovery, blending birdsong with human harmony and beats to create a dialogue across species.

An-Ting is a pianist, composer and multidisciplinary artist. Originally trained as a concert pianist, she started to explore electronic music since few years ago. She is currently collecting natural sounds wherever she travels and creating music with them to share to people.
