You Resurrect Me

Have you ever realized that a relationship that once seemed destined to succeed is broken beyond repair - well before the other person does? Franco-American duo Antisolar (Paris-based Olivier Raynal and L.A.-based Andrew Doolittle) reckon with the aftermath of such a realization in their new single, “Sorry”.  Olivier had the initial idea for the song, including the chorus melody and the word “sorry”, but it eventually became a vehicle for Andrew to finally attempt a sober assessment of a relationship of his that ended years ago.  Rather than writing from his own experience, though, he wrote about the breakup from the perceived perspective of the girlfriend who ended the relationship.  The song poetically captures both some of the fissures that created distance in the relationship (“How can it go on when you’re somewhere disappearing?” - a reference to Andrew being away on tour with no clear end date) as well as the clear finality of the split (“no balm on your wounds could mend a way back to you”).  Ultimately, “Sorry” is a different kind of breakup song: one from the vantage point of a person who had the wisdom to walk away.

The song is Antisolar’s fourth single, following ”Awake", an uplifting anthem that celebrates optimism despite our world's ever-pervasive conflict and confusion, "Do We Tremble At Night?", which ponders what we'll be left with if we allow the world around us to be destroyed and “You Resurrect Me”, which captures the despondency and the sense of being directionless that can stem from broken relationships, as well as the healing and rebirth found in new ones.

Have you ever known someone so inextricably bound to a destructive path that they’re unable to acknowledge how they’re hurting the people trying to pull them back? Franco-American duo Antisolar (Paris-based Olivier Raynal and L.A.-based Andrew Doolittle) explore this topic in “Drifting”, an energetic rock song about Andrew’s best friend’s descent into meth addiction. The song is written from the perspective of his best friend’s wife, who persistently tried to rescue the relationship even as the chasm between them became insurmountable. Olivier’s initial sketch for the song included the phrase “I don’t know what you want, and I don’t know what you need from me”, which came to represent the wife’s attempts to break through her husband’s addiction-filed bravado and re-establish connection for his sake, her sake, and for the sake of their young kids. The bridge of the song includes a portion of the Icarus myth, which was also alluded to in Rush’s “Bravado”, a song Andrew and his best friend frequently played together during high school. Ultimately “Drifting” tackles a difficult topic through the eyes of a devoted spouse who tries to rescue her partner despite the pain she's enduring herself.

Drifting

“Do We Tremble At Night?” is the second single released by Antisolar, a new band featuring Paris-based Olivier Raynal and L.A.-based Andrew Doolittle. The song was born of difficult questions that Olivier found himself wrestling with while watching news of a mass shooting: are we frightened of what we'll be left with if we allow the world around us to be destroyed? Can we move beyond our feelings of anger, grief and helplessness in order to bring about change? The subject matter eventually expanded beyond mass shootings to become a broader exploration of our potential to inflict harm on each other, the Earth, and ultimately ourselves.  Antisolar’s hope is that this song will lead listeners to seriously consider how they might be able to better our world despite the enormity of the challenges we face.

Olivier’s own exploration of these questions led him to Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya, home of the last two living Northern White Rhinos. While there, he was asked to recommend a song that could capture the essence of what Ol Pejeta is fighting for, namely restoring the world despite seemingly overwhelming odds, to use at the annual Global Gala For Rhinos. Realizing that “Do We Tremble At Night?” directly addresses the same theme, Olivier sent it to the CEO at Ol Pejeta without telling her who it was, and the song has been adopted for use at the gala, which will take place on October 23rd in London. Caroline Renno, principal dancer for Moulin Rouge in Paris, will perform a newly choreographed dance to the song.
