"L'île, c'est d'abord le voyage vers l'île." Hervé Hamon invites us to journey from island to island alphabetically, or haphazardly, following the whim of countless winds with ancient, musical names. In this podcast we begin from Isla de Chiloé, Patagonia, soon returning to the Mediterranean. Crete, Ikaría. Ithaca isn't in the book, for some reason. Malta is, for the wrong reasons. Ο δεύτερος κύκλος των Αναγνώσεων, της διαδικτυακής ηχητικής σειράς του Κέντρου Πολιτισμού Ίδρυμα Σταύρος Νιάρχος, είναι αφιερωμένος σε εμβληματικά κείμενα της παγκόσμιας λογοτεχνίας των τελευταίων δύο αιώνων που αφηγούνται ιστορίες από τις ζωές «καθημερινών ηρώων» από εποχές που έχουν παρέλθει. Έντγκαρ Άλαν Πόε, Ουίλιαμ Ουίλσον 

Εμπνευσμένο από λαϊκές ιστορίες για σωσίες αλλά και άρθρα σε έντυπα εκείνης της εποχής, το συγκλονιστικό διήγημα του Έντγκαρ Άλαν Πόε (1839) παρουσιάζει τον βίο ενός αριστοκράτη, ο οποίος κρύβει την πραγματική του ταυτότητα και παρουσιάζεται στον περίγυρό του με το όνομα Ουίλιαμ Ουίλσον. Η ζωή του, όμως, αλλάζει δραστικά, όταν ξαφνικά γνωρίζει το alter ego του που έχει το ίδιο ονοματεπώνυμο, τον ακολουθεί παντού και τον συμβουλεύει διαρκώς ψιθυρίζοντάς του νουθεσίες. Η σχέση τους είναι εξαρχής συγκρουσιακή, και ο αληθινός Ουίλιαμ θα θελήσει να απαλλαγεί από τον σωσία του καλώντας τον σε μονομαχία. 
Μέσα από αυτή την αριστοτεχνική μελέτη του ανθρώπινου χαρακτήρα, ο Πόε επιχειρεί –σαν ένας πρώιμος ψυχαναλυτής– να ψηλαφήσει τη σχέση του συνειδητού με το υποσυνείδητο, της όψης με το είδωλο, της φωνής με την ηχώ, του σώματος με το νου, του συναισθήματος με τη λογική, της δυαδικότητας με τον διχασμό. Αποφεύγοντας τις περίτεχνες φράσεις και τη χρήση επιθέτων, διαμορφώνει έναν λόγο απέριττο, γεμάτο αγωνιώδεις εικόνες που παρασύρουν τον αναγνώστη στα παράξενα μονοπάτια της σκέψης του Ουίλσον. 

Συγγραφέας, ποιητής και λογοτεχνικός κριτικός, ο Έντγκαρ Άλαν Πόε (1809 – 1849) είναι μία από τις πλέον εμβληματικές μορφές του αμερικανικού Ρομαντισμού και ένας από τους πιο πρωτοποριακούς διηγηματογράφους του 19ου αιώνα. Θεωρείται θεμελιωτής της αστυνομικής λογοτεχνίας και προάγγελος της πεζογραφίας επιστημονικής φαντασίας. Έγραψε πολυάριθμα διηγήματα μυστηρίου και ιστορίες τρόμου που άσκησαν τεράστια επιρροή στους Ντόυλ, Μπηρς,  Στήβενσον και Τσέστερτον, ενώ τα ποιήματά του, τα οποία μεταφράστηκαν στη Γαλλία από τον Μπωντλαίρ, αποτέλεσαν πηγή έμπνευσης για τους ευρωπαίους συμβολιστές. Υπήρξε επίσης ένας από τους πρώτους επαγγελματίες αμερικανούς κριτικούς λογοτεχνίας που διατύπωσε μια συγκροτημένη θεωρία περί λογοτεχνικής αισθητικής στα δοκίμιά του (Φιλοσοφία της σύνθεσης, Η ποιητική αρχή), τα οποία αποτέλεσαν κείμενα αναφοράς για τους σύγχρονους αλλά και τους μεταγενέστερους ομότεχνούς του.
