'Voices' was a BBC Local Radio project to reach out to a disadvantaged community and reflect the stories of the people who lived there. Based in the Fryerns area of Basildon i n 2003.
This documentary is a compilation of some of the many activities that featured on BBC Essex (radio).

CENTURY SPEAKS Trail: Transport (13) (social history)

Essex people talk about money and their struggles when they had little cash. They speak of poverty and being out of work before welfare benefits were universal. There are descriptions of being well-off in the 1920s, and the arrival of the Co-ops, hire purchase and credit cards. Modern marketing and materialism are  also discussed.

CENTURY SPEAKS 11 Money (social history)

Essex people talk about transport and mobility in the 20th Century. They describe journeys by horse and cart, bicycle and walking miles, before cars were commonplace. We hear about the days of trams, trolleybuses and long-since axed rural railway lines. The programme also features the impact of car ownership and the building of the M11 and M25 motorways and the Dartford Tunnel. There's also discussion of cheap air travel and holidays abroad - from the Harwich to Hook of Holland ferry to supersonic jets.
