'Legend' A Steve Helstrip Tribute Mix

Once in a while it’s great just to plug in a USB, select a track, hit record and go with the flow. This is exactly what this brand new series is all about.

Just like I do when playing out live, I’m only going to preselect my first two tracks. But instead of trying to read the dance floor, I’m going to follow my own mood and see where the mix takes me. 

You could hear a full on progressive warm up mix, an end of night tech trance set, or anything in between. It could feature the classics we all know and love, or trance from the present day, or even a mixture of both. These mixes will depend entirely on my mood at the time of recording.

The duration of each mix will also be unknown. It could be a quick 45 minute set just to fill in a bit of spare time, or something much longer that takes the listener on more of a journey.

Whatever you get, these sets will be totally unplanned, unrehearsed, warts and all live recordings. Just like you would hear at a club or an event.

Inspired... again... by this years coverage of the 'Luminosity Beach Festival', I decided to jump on the decks and record another unscripted and unrehearsed mix for my 'Live Sessions' series.

M.O.T!ON DJ Competition Mix

Looking back on the mix I submitted to the recent MOTION DJ competition, it made me realise that my transitions could have shown a lot more finesse. Listening back to the other entries and in my continual pursuit of improving my own technical abilities, I have put together this mix which I hope highlights some improvement.

Personally, listening back to this set in it's entirety, I think it's technically the best mix (so far) I have ever put out. In fact, I was so pleased with it, I have decided to make it the first mix in a brand new series to celebrate this. So I hope you enjoy it.

Trance Elation Volume 1

Now for something totally different.

Whilst on holiday relaxing by the pool in temperatures hovering around the mid 30's (you have got to love Tunisia), it made me look for a total change of pace for my listening material. After searching Soundcloud, I came across a superb progressive house and melodic techno mix from Andrew Duffield a.k.a. 'Samsāra'. (You may know him as the absolute legend behind the 'Club Ready DJ School' on YouTube).

It was superb and I thoroughly enjoyed it, so much so it made me want to explore this genre further to select a batch of tunes to create my very own mix.

It’s time for the classics again and this time around I have favoured a more upbeat start to the mix.

Instead of my normal progressive, promo style, 130 BPM beginning, I have gone straight in at 135 and built the mix up as per normal.

This set also features tunes that for some reason, I have totally overlooked in the past... god knows why!

Trance... The Classics # 1

After returning from a holiday to Ibiza in the summer of 1998, Antone bought his first turntables and took up DJ’ing spinning vinyl from multiple genres such as house, garage and trance.

Feeling like a fish out of water in the usual beer boy type of venue with their mainstream, chart based music policy, he yearned to hear those 4 on the floor beats once again.

After reading an article in Mixmag listing ‘20 clubs to visit before you die’, he was surprised to see one situated in Coalville, which was local to his native Leicester. That club was ‘The Emporium’ and the night was called ‘Passion’. Walking through those doors for the very first time a few weeks later changed his life forever and It was from that moment that his love for trance music grew exponentially.

Gaining inspiration from Marc West, John ‘00’ Fleming, Armin van Buuren, Paul Oakenfold and deciding to fully focus on trance, he started handing out mix CD’s to promotors which soon saw him getting bookings to play out live on a regular basis in his local area and at nights such as Nocturnal, BabyPassion and Fixation.

DJ’ing was front and centre of Antone’s life for the next 8 years until real life and other interests got in the way. This hiatus lasted over a decade, but in all that time his love for trance music never left him. Ever since he returned and fully embraced today’s new breed of digital technology, he is once again at one with the music he loves and hopes he can take the next step to continue his career.
