Joshua Bowyer and Jamie Kuzich are Anton Franc. This musical partnership was created at the beginning of 2010, when each found himself thrust into the Kimberley (far northwest Australia) under the guise of 5th year medical school. In this barren yet mysteriously enticing environment, they discovered a shared love of the song and a desire to explore new musical directions.
Their first session followed a day fishing for barramundi in the rivers near Derby and resulted in the second track on the EP "Letting go". This tune became a finalist in the 2010 West Australian Music Industry (WAMI) song of the year contest.
Despite being separated by 220km of asphalt, the red pindan sand proved to be surprisingly fertile. The isolation provided the duo with the space and freedom with which to explore new physical and musical landscapes. Over the next 10 months in between fishing trips, days skived off class and jams in the middle of the mudflats, they experimented with new sounds, recording techniques and moulded together two distinct musical identities to create the sounds heard on Anton Franc’s debut EP.
Written and recorded in bedrooms and basements of Broome, Derby and Perth, the self-titled EP is the product of the pair’s year in the Kimberley. Influenced by distance and perspective, the EP explores themes of isolation, restlessness, and wanderlust - mostly with tongue firmly planted in cheek.
Called “folktronica” by various housemates, the duo scoff at such labels and return to the basement with charango and synth in hand.
