𝐌𝐨𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐫𝐲 or mocking is the art of 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 or making light of a person or other thing, appears to be unique to humans, and serves a number of psychological functions, such as reducing the perceived imbalance of power between authority figures and common people, as a 𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨𝐨𝐥 in society for challenging established norms, questioning authority, and promoting 𝐬𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞.

Mockery can be done in a 𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐥𝐞 way but also can be 𝐜𝐫𝐮𝐞𝐥 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐡𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐟𝐮𝐥, such that it "conjures images of 𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧, deliberate 𝐝𝐞𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, even 𝐬𝐮𝐛𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧”. “𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐝 𝐣𝐨𝐤𝐞 mocks the victims. It is an added cruelty and it is also a display of power: we can put you through hell merely for our mild amusement.
