In I can't breathe the flute stays for an individuality which gets lost in its memories, until they overwhelm it. Their nostalgic acceptation is translated into a significant use of minor thirds and minor seconds; and they turn into a narrow space, where the individuality moves hardly, without any kind of hope about the possibility of coming out of this condition. 
The use of the same polarized harmony in the whole piece and the obsessive use of the low register of the flute, with the exception of two high notes recurring as a sort of warning; are here the elements generating claustrophobia. 
In addition, we have a neurotic alternation of different figures: on each of these figures I built an episode, so that the idea of a narrow space, comes to match with the formal organization. 
The piece ends with a sad and resigned melody, that is the last breath of the ego, defeated from the phantoms of the mind.

Jadis un beau palais, un rayonnant palais
 S’elevait
Le Roi Pensée avait ses assises estranges
 Dans ce palais.
Et la terre n’offrit j’amais à ses bons anges
 Pour y déployer leur vol
 Un plus merveilleux palais.
Il était couronné de flammes, il était,
Il était tout illumine.
Or ceci se passait dans l’au-delà des temps.
Et chaque fois qu’un vent venait mouvoir ses plantes
Venait virevolter sur ses pierres brillantes

Saisis par des mystérieuses harmonies

Dont nous écouterons les strophes infinies
