Old friends stay home while I wander around

Just a taste
Of this union of matter and space
I watched you take 6 white roses
One for our own and gave 
5 to the graves

Summer Forever

My name won’t stick
To the wall of bricks I’ve licked
Can’t find the cliques
Don’t write the hits
That turn a profit
Without the means
Materializing
Not hip enough to stay in place 
To play ironic

I always cared so much 
about your ears
That it made me bitter
Over several years 
I’ve put my soul into this noble craft
If it made me better 
Then where’s the pats across my back?

But once I quit
Trying to win
I tune back in
To this breathing moment
Knowing desire 
Is a clinging fire
Whether or not 
I choose to try to hold it

Replace these strings
And face the human beings
Some wound so tight
Or simply overburdened 
But still we’re here
To watch each other thrive
I’ll do my best each time
Because you’re worth it 

I used to fear you’d see the pain and tears
That I’d put in my day-to-day today tomorrow 
But now I see despite the suffering
My gratitude for what we made 
outweighs the sorrow

Needle Threads

I once said this was impossible
Remembered now it’s remarkable 
How little words mean
To hold the keys of connection with
Each other’s minds through a moldy box of strange memories 

Some are thinner
Some are so heavy that the cardboard erodes 
Gives you splinters
Some are burning, mine are made out of smoke

My favorite part of the carnival
Was that the zipper was tightly closed
So no one could see
How many of us were miserable
Flipping about as we shouted to avoid vomiting 

Cuz our dinner
Was a cold corn dog and a coke
Ticket winner
Kiss and tell me that we’re sharing a joke
I see your shadow in the smoke

Spent 7 years at a festival
I lost my youth at the bottom of a $12 pint
I burned my tongue on a pizza role
Deep fried my brain chasing high after incredible high
I sucked the juice from the vegetables
I sucked the weed out of every party that I could find
Rode up the hills on a bicycle 
I walked through caves swam through rivers and the air in the sky 

Far from bitter
That some time has passed and made me look old
Only better
With a billion new ideas to boast
I saw your shadow in the smoke
And since then I haven’t felt so alone

It makes me feel like I found home
