bayanihan [bɐ.jɐˈni.hɐn] refers to the communal spirit, with its origins derived from a unique Filipino tradition of physically moving houses. A community of neighbors would carry a family’s house on their shoulders and transport their literal home to a new destination. As a result, bayanihan is a journey of striving towards a goal of reaching unity; listeners feel the struggle, determination, and dedication of the neighbors.
This piece is a continuation to Balikbayan, similarly exploring the concept of ‘bayan’ within the Filipino identity. However, with the literal translation of bayanihan in English being ‘being in a “Bayan” (country), it is an exploration of how traditions shape the Filipino identity. Inspiration was drawn from Filipino arts, music, and dance–especially tinikling, the national dance of the Philippines. The traditional Philippine folk dance encompasses many aspects of the Filipino identity, particularly the idea of symmetry and parallelism. The dance itself originated during the Spanish era, involves two dancers, and two people beating two bamboo sticks together. With the varying colonization eras of the Philippines, many parallels can be drawn between seemingly disparate cultures. However, the reality is that one is a mere imitation of the other, bringing into question the genuine true Filipino self.
Players must manifest the characters of the story, villagers struggling and relocating this house together. Among the difficulties in communicating, they work together and become unified.
