A444

This was not supposed to be a piece of music, and maybe it isn't. But it is a discovery. I warn you, this is going to get esoterically technical, if not surreal. But it's me after all, right?

I was at first playing with delays, which graduated into wanting to play with some upright piano samples. But.. I recalled a post on FB yesterday that spoke about frequencies affecting salt, and I decided to tune the piano to A444 which if you add up the numbers you get 12.. which is in turn 'three'. Three is a sacred number in many ancient religions, including Christianity which even has a holy 'Trinity' ... But that is for another day..  

A444 is not typical anymore, but it was a long time ago. We abandoned 'non standard' tunings such as A444 when the 2nd world war ended. For some reason, a mystery I've yet to solve, the world of 'standard tuning' opted for A440, which was much lobbied by the Nazis before the war. Before the war, no one wanted to adopt that one, but for some reason.. after the war, the whole world went A440. Which actually has interesting effects on digital audio and we never noticed it.. or perhaps we did and blamed it on the zeros and ones..  

Hence my experiment.. 444 is very different. And it has a pleasant affect on digital audio. In the recording I made tonight for example, I introduced all manner of dissonant notes, and yet the synth never gets aliased. In Fact, it remains very musical. I tuned the piano first by the way, and found that it was so easy to tune the synth by 'ear'. And once I found the proper sweet spot, everything around me shimmered. You can hear it inthe notes as they interact with each other and the delay. It never gets aliased. And the VST I used for the synth is a freebie, so it is not all that great to begin with.. until now. Now it sounds very analog. In fact, so much so that I did not alter the final mix at all. No EQ, no compression, nothing. 

The other thing I found surprising was the way the final notes decay. Somehow, the computer is able to discern the lowest notes all the way down, so no 'dithering' was required and none was placed in the file. And lastly, I expected the MP3 to be trashy, and it isn't! 

So something tells me that the zeros and ones interpreted by the computer 'like' A444.. it does something to its interpretation of the data. I think it understands it clearer. What do you think??

Once

This was entirely recorded in my old trusty MPC3000, including the vocals. Later they were all sequenced together with my T3 and old ESQ1. I assembled the song as a series of edits in Wavelab. 

We took a 45 second song and turned it into a 7 minute piece. Gary did some rapping, and voice scratching. I did some scratching on an old mono synth.
