The Society was delighted to welcome Eoin Keith to the Society to discuss his phenomenal win in the 170km UTMB Oman 2019 race, finishing in a time of 36 hours and 4 minutes.
Eoin regaled the audience with a mile-by-mile breakdown of his historic win and titanic battle with Hamdan Al-khatri. Eoin really gave a sense of the how it feels to run immersed in the natural beauty of Oman’s dramatic interior; through deep wadis, high ridges, ancient villages, and more than 2,200M of elevation gain onto Jebel Akhdar, the Green Mountain. The Green Mountain is famed for its rose water, refreshing cooler climate and fruit orchards, which are typically laid out in terraces on the mountain slopes, endowed with natural springs and falaj. The runners' journey leads them off the beaten tourist tracks, allowing them to explore the Sultanate’s hidden gems that are located deep within its rugged, untouched landscapes. The 130km mountain course is hailed by National Geographic as the ‘world’s toughest adventure race’. The ultra-trail route extends over the summit of Jebel Shams (3000m - the highest mountain in Arabia) to cover even more stunning terrain.
Providing a long course of 170km with over 10,000+m of vertical gain, this is undoubtedly one of the toughest and most technically challenging in the world. To win a UTMB race is at the top of every ultrarunners bucket list and to hear the story of his race first-hand was a real privilege.

The Good Neighbour: A Commemorative Lecture on the Life of Sultan Qaboos 

 Jeremy Jones is Senior Associate Member at the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies and was previously a Research Fellow at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government.  He has coauthored two books about Oman:  Oman, Culture and Diplomacy (Edinburgh 2012) and A History of Modern Oman(Cambridge 2015).  He has also consulted for the Omani government since the 1980s.

He will be speaking upon the life and 50 year reign of the late Sultan Qaboos bin Said Al Said. The lecture will reflect on his reign and the unparalleled advances it has had on Oman’s society as well as the vital influence he had in promoting the stability of the Gulf region. Helen Lackner has worked as a consultant in social aspects of rural development in over thirty countries in the Middle East, Africa, Asia and Europe. She has spent the past four decades researching Yemen, working in the country for fifteen years. Lackner is currently Associate Researcher at the London Middle East Institute at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, and was the 2016 Sir William Luce Fellow at Durham University. The editor of Journal of the British-Yemeni Society, she is also a regular contributor to Oxford Analytica’s briefs and openDemocracy. Her publications include Yemen in Crisis: Autocracy, Neo-Liberalism and the Disintegration of a State and Why Yemen Matters: A Society in Transition (editor). 



Brief Survey of Omani-Yemeni relations 1970-2020

Helen Lackner has been involved with Yemen for almost half a century and the peninsula even longer. She will outline the transformations in relations between the Sultanate of Oman and the different Yemeni states during this period, focusing on the internal and international reasons for the changes on both sides. She will put these in the context of the social, political and economic contexts of the two countries.

EP3: An insight into the rich history of Omani gastronomy with Dina Macki (Dine with Dina)

Violet Astor is a UK based conservation artist who produces large and detailed charcoal drawings combined with natural materials found in the environment of her subjects. Her special interest is travelling to the wild corners of the planet to collaborate with wildlife conservation projects. Her aim is to draw endangered species to raise awareness and funding to support their survival. Violet is a self-taught artist who discovered drawing during the years she was chronically ill with Lyme Disease, which in turn became an integral part of her healing.

EP4: Wild Oman with Violet Astor

Her Highness Sayyida Basma Al Said is a pioneering mental health advocate in the Sultanate of Oman with over 17 years of experience. She founded the ‘Whispers of Serenity’ Clinic in 2011 after working at Sultan Qaboos University for 11 years. She is passionate about raising awareness of mental health, breaking down barriers and challenging stereotypes and taboos. Her expertise covers group counselling, couples counselling, relaxation and meditation, art and drama therapy, counselling for abuse and maltreatment survivors, family counselling, sexology, and hypnosis. Al Said's long and successful career is recognized across Oman and the Middle East, and she has received several awards honouring her contributions to the mental health sector.
