Quiet Joys

Hailing from Manchester, Aon were fusing folk with technology way before any of the current wave of Alt folk or Indie Hybrids. With the heart and soul of the group provided by Graham and Annie Burton, regular players on the North West folk circuit, they took the electronic pulse of the city and fused it with their grass roots sound with help from musician/technocrat Tim Harney.
Aon signed to Big Life after their demo fell into the hands of label supremo and producer Youth who played them on rotation during a holiday in India, and returned home to hone their ambient vibe.
Their eponymous album was released in 1993 but in the wake of Big Life’s troubles, Aon got caught in the cross fire and their album all but vanished.
Following another deal with a major label yet further tracks remained unreleased leading to a sense of despair, a rejection of the music industry and the band all but disappeared. Having languished in obscurity for nearly two decades Aon have decided to make their lost tracks available on Soundcloud and Bandcamp.
The first thing that stands out on hearing these songs again is Annie’s graceful, tender vocals, a heritage she passed on to her daughter Lou Rhodes, the critically acclaimed singer songwriter who forms one half of Lamb. With the etymology of Aon meaning ‘life’ or ‘being’ it is this timeless quality which is embodied in their music.
