Recital: John Lithgow

One evening early in 2009 my wife played me a podcast of the actor John Lithgow recorded on the PBS show “Bill Moyers Journal”. During the show he recited several poems, but I was struck by one in particular – “Do not go gentle into that good night” by the Welsh poet Dylan Thomas. The poem resonated with me, particularly because of my own Welsh roots, and I decided to set about writing music to accompany Lithgow’s recital.  The task took longer than expected as I experimented with several different approaches to try and get the feel I was after.  In the end it all came together, with the music opening up a new dimension to Thomas’s words, and perhaps substantiating his belief that poetry can be understood by something other than the eyes.

Old age should burn and rave at close of day; 
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.  

Though wise men at their end know dark is right, 
Because their words had forked no lightning they

One night I had a dream that I was walking through a snowy landscape, alone beneath a dark, foreboding winter sky. Above me I caught a glimpse of a flock of dark feathered birds high above the clouds. As I watched them I heard music.

At that moment I woke up with the music still with me. I went to my studio, I sat down at the piano, and I started improvising. It was 3am, and very quickly I was in an uninterrupted flow. I began recording, and improvised this song in one take.

The cover art for the single is a beautiful image of 18 birds that my wife painted.

”18 Birds in a Winter Sky” is a gentle, slowly building solo piano piece, with a soft ambiance and contemplative, thoughtful feel. Perfect for underscoring picture and imparting an introspective mood. Ideal also for relaxing to, particularly during savasana at the end of a yoga session.

BLACK SUN RAYS echoes the mental and emotional disintegration of a particle physicist—a “Jumper”—from a crew conducting experiments known as ‘ETERNITY ARRAY’ at a large particle accelerator when the event occurred. Approximately 27 days after The Event, the
physicists and their team developed the ability to “jump” into the Liminal Nether, hoping to traverse its manifold and return— or reunite with loved ones, or some semblance of reconnection.

This cinematic, dark folk, and gothic country inspired track features a haunting duet between Réal Cardinal and Mari Kattman. Together, they evoke and embrace the merging of identities
and memories fractured by the Liminal Nether. Mari Kattman, celebrated for her focused solo work and collaborations with notable artists across the world, as well as her output with Helix, reunites with Comaduster after their acclaimed tracks “Monolith” and “Riverbound” from
DARKER MATTER. Her powerful presence elevates BLACK SUN RAYS to a profound exploration of transformation, loss, and acceptance.
