Future Feelings - Aware

This track is about emergence from the combination of polar opposites. Fragments of self from very different places, but part of the same whole.

Combining classical and computational elements is something I've been experimenting with for some years, but this attempt to combine the extreme opposites of each was spurred on by some chance DJing experiments, a fortuitous collaboration opportunity, and the amazing work of my friends Olafur Arnalds and Vaetxh (Rob Clouth). I found that I could mix the most beautiful and delicate piano solo of Olafur, with the most hyper-edited and jarring glitch of Vaetxh, and that the result actually worked, well, for me anyway, even if half the people in the club stood confused about how to dance. So when the opportunity arose to work with the pianist and composer Tom Hodge, I wanted to try and create this form of merger of extremes for a release, rather than it being confined to my DJ toolbox (also on the classical meets glitch history from a slightly different angle, check out "Rossz Csillag Alatt Született" from Venetian Snares 2005!).

After some discussion of ideas and approach with Tom, he sat and played and made some recordings for me, which I then chopped and build chords and structure around, sent them back to him to play over the top of again, and then back to me to edit and glitch the playing along with the nasty noises. My detailing process was that of finding some interesting sound sources (binaural recordings, drum hit samples, clangs and slams etc) and using some Max for live randomisation chains to generate lots of partially random complexity which I could then edit as audio before repeating the process with additional layers, eventually bringing the recorded piano audio in to the editing too.

At completion of the audio I was really happy to find out that Nick Cobby, one of my favourite video artists and long standing collaborator, was available and interested in working on the visual side of the project. He took the combination of seemingly incompatible opposites, and applied it visually with his beautiful generative forms, smooth and organic for the melodic sections, and jagged and abrasive for the percussive sections - big thanks to Nick for his amazing work as always!

So, that's probably enough ranting about this track from me, aside from why it is like it is, I hope it's something that you can enjoy irrespective of the conceptual faff.

The fourth album is exactly the description of this "Feuerfalter", a kind of backflash into the impressive career of Boris Brejcha. An album that deliberately shows how the artist works versatile. Times slightly floating, sometimes wild hitting the wing, always full of passion. The influences of his travelings and performances characterize his art again.

This creates a music that may be accompanied on Brejchas audience the whole day: at home, in a relaxed atmosphere or just at night, when the trip through the clubs starts. On the album "Feuerfalter" this individuality is turned on. Brejcha even picks up the desire of his ans to weave a few quieter tracks into his cosmos.

After a brief hiatus, More Music is back and this time the This Is Music subsidiary has enlisted the help of Kresy in the shape of a 4 track Ep.

Having been so impressed with his Basement Trax 12” released on John Talabot's Hivern Discs back in 2012, he was immediately on our radar as someone to keep an eye. 2014 has already seen Kresy release music on Jimpster's Freerange Records and a two track release for Jay Shepherd's Retrofit label, both solidifying our respect and love for his analogue-heavy take on house music. It is therefore an absolute pleasure to announce this four-track release which also includes a remix from Flux residents Aartekt. 

The title track jacks back and forth breaking down to a 2 step whilst wailing pads sore across. Expresso moves things down to the basement with a low slung groove that develops before stripping back to create perfect warm up fodder. Sticky heads back to the main room with Kresy’s Chicago influences shining through. Aartekt concludes the ep with a remix where driving bass and drums and a nod to the 80s keeps it brooding yet effective on the dancefloor.

Finally the moment has arrived for us to release new original music on our own label! This monster release has a history that takes us back more than four years to a 48 hour studio session at our beloved Marcy Hotel in Brooklyn, NY. The original collaborative effort came from a laundry list of familiar Crew Love players including Soul Clap's Charlie and Eli, Wolf + Lamb's Gadi Mizrahi, No Regular Play's Greg Paulus, the lovely Deniz Kurtel and even Mr. Fantastic himself, Lee Curtiss. After all was said and done the body and inspiration of the record was there but what was lacking was a strong vocal. Enter Robert Owens, arguably one of the most prolific and sonically recognizable singers in House music PERIOD. Soul Clap and Robert first met at the Garden Festival in Croatia in 2011 and had discussed writing music together ever since. Finally a date to record was booked at Alex Morris' Invader Music studios in London. Robert took Charlie's original vocal idea, written about a relationship gone awry and expanded it into a full on beautiful expression of heartbreak in his timeless style. 

This has been the story of how the Deep Mix was born, but we knew that we needed something for the club, so while on tour in Japan Eli stripped the session down to the bare essentials and added a killer bassline, Charlie wrote piano parts, pads from the Jupiter 6 and the Club Mix pieced itself together. Once Crew Love's Tanner Ross caught wind of the project he wanted in, hit the studio and delivered one of his signature explorations in bizarre musical minimalism with the added help of Greg Paulus on trumpet.

For such an important release, we couldn’t stop there and we reached out to our new friend and musical idol "Little" Louie Vega, who called the vocal “vintage Robert”, then he blessed us with THREE magically unique journeys from rough and tough, to dancefloor deepness. One of these mixes and an instrumental will only be available on the double 12” vinyl release. 

Whew!!! What a journey it has been, but we gotta end it with a short statement from Mr. Owens: "When writing Misty I thought about what beautiful warmth I felt when first meeting Charles and the Soul Clap family. [This record is] a reflection of you and yours my friend!!"
