Athlete Whippet join the Toy Tonics family! The London/Berlin-based duo make a sound that is based on futuristic breakbeats combined with deep, jazz chord progressions and a kind of funk that sounds more like it was made in 2100 then in a year behind us. Definitely not a retro record the Vesta EP is further proof that the connection between London and Berlin that has been build by several Toy Tonics artists (Cody Currie the latest in the gang) is becoming a strong one. The combination of the Berlin dancefloor sound and the UK jazz fusion soul is changing the scene and creating new moods. Neo soul and house, broken beats and disco.. there are lot of things happening in that new world and Athlete Whippet could be a strong player in that new sound.

The 2 guys already achieved great support by UK radio DJs such as Annie Mac and Jamz Supernova for their their first collaborative EP Touch (with Metronomy’s Olugbenga), followed by their 2020 solo EP 'Your Love Is Lifting Me', an ode to compassion and solidarity, and remixes for labels including Rhythm Section.

‘Vesta’ is not just the title track of the EP but also the name of the South London Road where they shared an apartment, built a studio in their living room, and put together the first ideas for this EP.

Both Robin and Avi come from a live performance background, played in bands since their early teenage years before they met studying music at Goldsmiths in London. You can hear a playful live quality throughout the EP. It’s not your average house productions with the usual formalistic patterns, but a very original, very fresh style - hard to copy (but easy to dance to).

Now based between Berlin and London, they collaborate with their friend, Athens-born, Berlin-based artist Aphty Khéa on Yesterday and Can’t Make My Mind Up.

Avi and Robin their label squareglass and a London-residency inviting guests such as Seb Wildblood, Will Saul, Asquith, Anu and also have a monthly show on Rinse FM.

Made between London, Granada, and Berlin over the course of four years, @aphty_khea's next EP, 'Salt & Copper', takes the shape of a warm, soulful five-tracker via @squareglass.

The record's title track, 'Salt & Copper', tells the story of an emotional sexual encounter by the sea whilst menstruating, and embodies radical self-love, accepting and finding a home in your own body even when society deems it as filthy, unwanted or taboo.

I've had, and continue to have, the immense joy in being a part of a very unique community that's built on solidarity, with the purpose of fighting intolerance and discrimination: Refugee Accommodation Space City Plaza - a beacon of hope in today's world. The track was inspired and kickstarted by the words of some of the youngest members of our community, recorded in our music classes during the summer of '17. This track is an ode to all the beautiful people that comprise our massive and diverse family, and the collective effort of everyone ever involved.

City Plaza is a self-organised housing project for homeless refugees in the centre of Athens accommodating 400 people, among them 180 children. It is entirely run on voluntary effort and is based on principles of self-organisation and autonomy, without any paid staff or public funding. It does not receive any funding from governments or NGOs, and depends entirely on the political support and practical solidarity from within Greece and abroad.

Greek-British electronic producer, singer, composer, multi-instrumentalist, and visual artist Aphty Khéa, innovatively blends warm, blissful, driving electronica with soulful melodies and captivating vocal harmonies. Supported on Radio 1 by Jamz Supernova on and Jaguar on BBC Introducing Dance, their latest EP 'Salt & Copper' received a warm welcome, with further features included on 6 Music with Lauren Laverne, DJ Mag, Mixmag, Beatport and KALTBLUT Magazine. 

Lyrically, Aphty bears tales of vulnerability with poetic messages, touching on subjects of queerness, gender identity, social anxiety, death, existentialism, sex, menstruation and radical self love. Using a mixture of chopped, pasted and edited samples, they surgically dissect every sound they make including synths, piano, percussion, whilst sampling every single vocal style that exists is their voice.  Moving between Berlin, London and Athens, Aphty Khéa builds a hard-hitting visual sound world, offering through their music videos a glimpse into their imagined sonic dreamland.

With a musical background that spans choir from the age of six, studying classical singing and piano at school, winning junior Eurovision in Greece, then swapping their home country for London at 18 to study contemporary singing and vocals at the ICMP Music Institute, and finally a BA degree in songwriting. Beyond composing, performing and producing their music Aphty, has participated in the radical left scenes of Greece, France and Germany standing in solidarity for dignified living in the LGBTQIA+,  anti-capitalist, antiracist, antifascist and antisexist scenes.
