Sunday Away From Work

The recently released Andy Cato album on Apollo Records was a time capsule of 20 years of rave culture.  It was a personal record of someone’s trip through the mortal maze of dance music. “I did it for me,” asserts Cato. “I was worried that anyone else might not have the same feelings when they heard the tracks, but I played it to some people and they seemed to get caught up in the journey as well.” It’s all in there somewhere. The squat raves. The Pepsi-sponsored stages. The DJ gigs in front of 100,000 people. Arriving at an LA gig in a Sopwith Camel. It’s a history of the past 20 years through the lens of one person.

Now this personal music has been re-imagined by two legends of electronic music who have  both previously released classic music on R&S and Apollo.
FSOL first appeared on R&S with their debut album ‘Accelerator’, their remix of ‘The Coastal Path’ as The Amorphous Androgynous comes as a three part opus of psychedelic rock, ambient and a funky wig out ending mixing live drums, hammond, guitars and flutes.
Biosphere aka Geir Jenssen released some of his most well known music on Apollo including the ‘Patashnik’ album.  It’s an honour to welcome him back to the label with his beautiful, spacious reworking of ‘Sunrise Sant Agnes’.

Echospace Detroit’s cv313 aka Stephen Hitchell joins forces with Federsen for the second instalment on the latter’s newly minted Alt Dub label with the ‘Skyspace’ EP.Over the past decade and a half San Francisco based artist Federsen has been making his mark on the dub infused techno and house sound, delivering his vintage tape delay and analogue gear driven sound via the likes of Mixcult, Greyscale, Lempuyang and Ohm Series among others. In May this year Federsen inaugurated his own Alt Dub label with a split EP from himself and Hidden Sequence, and here the story continues following the split format with more original material from himself and cv313, accompanied by both artists remixing each other to run alongside their originals across the 12’’.
cv313’s original mix of ‘Skycrossing’ opens the release and in typical Hitchell fashion treats us to eight and a half minutes of deep soundscapes, spiralling dub echoes, muted drums and a subtly unfurling feel throughout. Federsen’s ‘Dub’ remix of ‘Skycrossing’ then follows, offering a more refined and reduced feel with subby pulsations and crisp drums intertwined with dubby fragments of the original tracks.
On the flip-side Federsen’s original ‘Skyway’ leads, employing a sturdy rhythm section with nuanced dub echoes and rumbling low-end swells. To conclude the release cv313 offers up his ‘Dub’ interpretation of ‘Skyway’, stamping his mark on things with phasing atmospherics, intricate oscillations and fluttering percussion.

So proud to share my EP 'Upside Down', released on the legendary Japanese label mulemusiq with you. 🐝

Before we head into faster territories with my releases, I decided to produce something playful, slow and enriched with my acoustic instruments such as my main one, the violin and also one which I've auto didactically taught myself - the flute. I used the traditional Chinese Xiao flute as well as the classic flute. 
It felt so satisfying to weave these beautiful sounds into the arrangements, to let the acoustic world blend into the electronic realm - it works so well 😍

It's been fun to explore the housy territory for mulemusiq in this release. I've always wanted to do that and it ended up to be my very own version of house, as it's located somewhere in between different genres but still offers some characteristics of house in the tracks besides 'Beyond Light and Shade', which is more breakbeaty and might go more into the direction of general Electronica I guess.

The whole cosmos of the EP is a surreal one, inspired by things like Adventure Time, Ghibli and Nintendo games like Zelda BOTW or Animal Crossing. 
I love weird things, which seem to be random at first but still harmonic in a way. The vocal of Upside Down was a freestyle which I recorded in one go - I love writing lyrics and telling stories which make no sense but create a new surreal world, loaded with cuteness, pictures full of fantasy and of course my beloved nature inspired motifs such as leafs growing out of my ears ;)

Obscure shapes rise in the distance, a haze of smoke obscures all. Movements seem slow and time is but a figment of the imagination. The focus turns inward as a sense of calmness encompasses, letting the mind relax. Overhead the sky is black, but filled with stars, with brief flashes of light as celestial bodies march across the heavenly vista.

This mental imagery springs to mind when listening through Pierre Nesi aka Owl’s forthcoming LP, titled, ‘Fragments of Darkness’ on the storied Korean imprint, Huinali Recordings. A wonderful pairing, and an instant listen whenever either name pops up. Fragments of Darkness will be Owl’s second release, following 2022’s ‘Forest Shadow’. Coincidentally not, another must listen if you’ve not heard already.

Lanterns Illuminate The Infinite Space comes as the final, 7th track to the musical odyssey that Owl has crafted. Beautiful, soft pads lead off and establish a warm atmospheric vibe. The light to the darker moments in the release, the counter that Pierre is so adept at crafting. Ebbing and flowing, the track expands and soon a prominent melody emerges, accented by flashes of synths that give structure and development. 

Fragments of Darkness will be released on May 12th, off of Huinali Recordings, on all platforms.
