This was a fun track to make. I wanted to try and make something purely noisy and intense, but always delivering a feeling that 100 times more power was still fighting to get out, like the potency of human nature. After deciding on a basic chord structure, it was just a matter of layering and layering, which gave an interesting interference result, you can hear the different waves interacting to give beating patterns.

The layers were made from some Operators in Ableton with Guitar Rigs and Saturators, plus a Moog Minitaur with a fast LFO with high resonance, plus Andy Ramsay’s overdriven guitar amps and speakers re-recorded, plus Phil Kieran’s tape saturation/distortion - it’s basically a right mess! You can even hear some of the leftovers on Phil’s tape at the end, with him speeding it up and slowing it down. Interestingly, that Moog on there was the only analogue synthesiser used in the whole album, the rest was all sourced digitally, albeit with some subtle analogue compression and analogue mixing desk throughs at the end.

"Anyone that knows me, knows that my main passion is music. I spend all day listening to music at work and my vinyl collection of 16k pieces greets me when I get home. I knew about Ghostly International before they contacted me in the early 2000’s and we would write off and on. They used to send me big packages of white labeled vinyl, it was decadent.

Late 2007 I got a call from Ghostly asking if I was up for designing a new single for Dabrye. It was a dream come true and I feel like I found a friend who really understood me. I have had the distinct privilege to design over 100 covers for Ghostly, and that is only the half of it.

When they asked me to do a compilation, I was all about it. I wanted to do three or more compilations because I wanted to segment it up into different sections (Ghostly, SMM and Spectral). It is impossible to reduce the entire label to 15 tracks. Ghostly is dynamic, they don’t fit one sound, genre or idea.

So I approached it as a mixtape of sorts. I tried to find a common thread that spoke to me and create a mood around that idea. Some of my favorite tracks are not on here. JDSY 'Horizon Line' makes my head spin. Choir of Young Believers 'Paralyse' takes me to another place. There are so many more.

We find it slightly hard to believe that it's been three years since Blocks and Escher launched Narratives Music with their explorative 'Sagan' / 'Broken' 12-inch. Unafraid to stray from its drum & bass roots, the label has since become synonymous with encapsulating, poignant, cutting-edge music.

Favouring quality over quantity, Blocks and Escher have kept the Narratives release schedule sparse, only now hitting the big 1-0. Along with the founders, only Overlook, ASC, Loxy & Resound and Rhyming In Fives have had their names tied to the label, and it's the latter who returns now for the tenth release.

First surfacing in 2013 with the Hindsight EP, Rhyming In Fives remains enigmatic to say the least. Little to nothing is known about the producer, and aside from a free download that dropped last week via Mixmag, the new 4-track (plus 2 digital bonuses) Light Leaks EP is only the second offering ever from the mysterious musician.

Data Transmission's favourite cut from the record, 'Mnemonic', continues the producer's pioneer compositional style. A heartwarming vision of the future, painted in the robust percussion and richly textured synths of the 1980s, the track proves both musically intriguing and spiritually uplifting.
