Following the May release of his debut album “Rising Despite Circumstances” we celebrate Adam Gillett’s record with a very special collection of interpretations and reimaginings “Rising Despite Circumstances: Remixed”.

For this collection we’ve assembled a truly monumental troupe of producers to give their takes on the anthemic and ethereal originals and the 11 takes that comprise this remix record represent a staggeringly diverse breadth of styles, genres, and tones all while keeping the heart of the original record beating.

Brooklyn based artist Luko M kicks off the proceedings with a lush gently glitchy rearrangement of the album opener “Can We Do Better?” answered by UK producer Grant Deane’s hauntingly ethereal and tender rework of the same tune. Our good friend, Bay area’s Benito keeps things airy on his sparse and gorgeous take on “Like An Animal” giving way to King Grump’s endlessly groovy flip of “Reap What You Sow”. Aussie art pop duo Ducks! turn “Still Going Round In Circles” into a delicious dub odyssey, leading the way for German system heater expert Dogpatrol to melt some faces with a simply rude bass driven take on “Like An Animal”.

Ibiza based Woodland Creature Tsodor turns up with the kind of dancefloor smasher he’s made a name for unleashing upon unexpecting dancers with his storming “Reap What You Sow” flip - opening the floor for living legend Timo Maas’s simply devastating DJ weapon of a rework of mid album banger “Check Yo Stamina On The Reg”. Keeping the dancefloor moving comes Special Zip’s gloriously playful and infectiously vibey play with “Like An Animal”. Midlands resident breaks enthusiast Rawtrachs drops a decidedly euphoric and old school take on the same track before the record comes to stunning conclusion with long time collaborator and dear friend Justin Margovan’s complex, driving and deeply atmospheric rework of “Reap What You Sow” as Nihon Ten.

A heartfelt dedication to his son Isaias, ‘Aspirations for Young Xol’ takes us through the life of a pillar in the electronic music community - Santiago Salazar. From his formative years spent in California to his connection with Detroit and the passing of a childhood friend, the long-player’s tracks signpost the musician’s significant experiences, both positive and negative. This meaningful body of work was released digitally on Pastel Voids and now Rekids release the album on wax.

‘Saturated Fear’ sets a deep tone for the LP, flanging melodies and echoing claps float through the composition before the album’s title track ‘Aspirations for Young Xol’ offers haunting arpeggios with occasional acidic overtones which are cleverly offset by beautifully designed lead synth transitions. ‘Bloodlines’ follows a similar musical vein with delayed bass riffs that are suspended above shimmering hihats and a weighted kick.

Santiago provides three beatless pieces throughout, which digress into more emotional territory whilst offering brief respite from his heavier drum work. ‘Xol’s Pain’ combines orchestral strings and swelling synthesisers which build tension with a subtly complex, evolving motif. Both ‘Dark Matter’ and ‘Ode to Stinson’ use arresting atmospheres, warped arpeggios and ethereal pads which lull the listener into a retrospective mood.

An intensity builds in the later tracks, a gritty but powerful low end provides a solid foundation in ‘Orange Blossom Thump”, eventually making way for a hectic and elastic lead synth before ‘Pachuco Dub’ displays drones that build a dissonant pressure in which the complex tom rhythms and rolling hi hats can grow. ‘Sarah Rivera’ hypnotises with its delectable chord progressions and complimentary melodies which seem to float above a rigid drum composition to close the album with style.

Apollo proudly presents the return of SW, joined by partner SVN for a sublime 6 track EP. 

SW's lush sound design and hypnotic arrangements of 2017’s ’The Album’ had hearts and minds swooning following it’s license from SUED to Apollo.
It’s balmy glory won over Pitchfork ('deeply expressive debut album’ 8/10), Rolling Stone (best electronic albums 2017) and XLR8R (Best releases 2017) amongst many others. 

One year later, SW and SVN have gone into the studio, together; “to make some original music specifically for Apollo. The results are the 6 tracks on this EP,” they share in a typically taciturn statement.

Taking inspiration from the iconic house and techno of the mid / late 90s - SW and SVN combine dreamy melodies and mesmeric grooves with unfussy, focussed minimalism, their beguiling, modern take on classic sounds and rhythms remains thrillingly unique and elusive. 

While SW and SVN are more comfortable out of the limelight, this 6 track EP for Apollo once again proves that they are rightly worthy of the hype that swirls around them.

Premiere : Karima F - Two Eggs In A Hammock [Schloss]

Introducing COSMIC RESIDENTS v. 1, the first in an ongoing compilation series from Cosmic Resonance Records. This series will showcase emerging talent from Toronto’s underground creative electronic music scene. 

This first edition features local favourites and Cosmic Resonance residents Radiant Aura Faculty (aka Raf Reza), Korea Town Acid and Hemingway along with (and making their vinyl and Cosmic Resonance debut) Body Butter, WeTurnToRed and Smoke & Shadows.

On the A-side, Hemingway kicks things off with Astralnauts, a deep, dubbed out boogie breakbeat burner dedicated to explorers of the astral plane featuring fellow label don Chris Evans on rhythm guitar. Radiant Aura Faculty (aka Raf Reza) takes us even deeper with the mystical Cid Pit Riddim, a slamming 707 acid bender sure to melt any dance floor. Things get slippery with Body Butter’s debut single ‘Lights In The Hallway’, a timeless operatic pop opus featuring Neil Rankin (aka Burt Sugar), Chris Evans (aka Mr. Bliss) and Hemingway behind the board. On the flip side, things heat up with Shamanta Chandran’s project WeTurnToRed, featuring the progressive modular techno odyssey Warm Winter an escape from Toronto’s long and tumultuous blizzards. Emerging from the Mahogani Forest, Korea Town Acid reinterprets Hemingway’s emotional ode to the jazz aesthetic Blue Notes with her trademark cerebral rhythms and a masterful bassline that elevates the original to new heights. Closing it off, we have an amazing collaboration between Curtis Clark (aka Smoke of Lab.our Music) & Em Zy (member of Nikki Fierce) called Smoke & Shadows with their stellar debut single Convincing Thoughts that features Em Zy’s hazy vocal emanations amidst a backdrop of mystical reverberations and a dark, powerful groove.

The music of Maltese producer Rudi Agius aka Jupiter Jax has always felt as much defined by mood as movement, guided by the “specific melancholy” of specific melodies. His latest long-player skews even more cinematic, conjuring twilit gardens and crooked city streets, windswept and warped by memory: No Such Thing. Inspired by notions of escape and the unknown, and threaded with dexterous live instrumentation, the album treads vibrant hybrids of moonrise electronica, downtempo dream house, and Balearic breakbeat, brooding but breezy, a Mediterranean midnight of the mind.

Agius speaks of his songs in terms of intuition and inevitability, how and where they transport the listener. These twelve tracks slip between senses and spheres, interplanetary but placeless, noir glimpses of ghostly coastlines and reflective reveries. Flutes, trumpets, voices, and percussion contour his club designs with a tactile fluidity, jazz accents reflecting off rain-slicked marble harbors, the wakening dawn still worlds away.
