Autant inspiré par la fusée Apollo que par l'Apollo Theater de Harlem, épris de futurisme au sens de Marinetti et de groove au sens de Sly Stone, le duo dont quelques heureux privilégiés parlent depuis quelques mois voit loin. Ambitieuse, toxique, la musique d'Apollo est hors-sol, mouvante, installée aux avant-postes et pourtant primitive, basée sur la répétition - on ne citera pas Steve Reich, même si nos deux Parisiens sont de parfaits intellos qui sont passés par la presse ; très furtivement pour Mattias, le pianiste fou qui s'est démultiplié dans de nombreux projets, et plus durablement pour Ivan, plus soucieux d'être en harmonie avec l'aristocratie rock'n'rollienne. Leur rencontre a muté en quelque chose d'hybride et de puissant : une espèce de son « mad-mancunien » passé par le Cologne du label Kompakt sans oublier l'énergie Bloc Party des années zéro. Mattias le musicien et Ivan le journaliste ont réinventé leurs rôles, l'un prenant les commandes du vaisseau spatial tandis que l'autre fait claquer sa basse et ses textes mêlant illusions pixiennes et révolution copernicienne. On pense alors à nos amis grecs à qui ce mythe apollonien, au fond, revient. C'est le choix de la raison sur le corps, le sauvage, l'électrique. La force de la musique d'Apollo est justement de ne pas opposer l'émotion d'un synthé à la rigueur d'une rythmique qui garde ses accidents. Ces morceaux sont vivants, live comme James à l'Apollo !"
