Yeliena and I renewed our vows and finally got rings after 3 years married. We threw a party, and also celebrated 2 close friends' birthdays, same day. Picture is of us reading the inscription inside the rings that says "Closer still..." which is our prayer and intention every time we do a medicine journey together. This was my first mix on an Opus Quad, and first time since the 2000's mixing without a laptop. Had to feather with the jog-wheels more than I would have liked, but good overall. Stick around for the very last track...  if you're old enough, you definitely heard it at big raves in the 1990's!

A journey created very much in the moment, no planning whatsoever, for a beautiful group of wild Punatics at Space City for the third of Shon Escholada's Summer Saturday Sunset Series. This one starts with an ambient original composition I did with my friends Laura and Kirt of "Creative Frequencies" and Tyler Gibson of Birds of Paradise on wood flute, goes into a gorgeous psybass track by Hedflux, (layered a Tori Amos track on-top, briefly...  wasn't an easy mix!) then into some unique deep dubstep and bass music, then moves through downtempo organic, into Afro House with some unique broken beat stuff mixed in.  I like it.  The crowd liked it.  I hope you like it.

Getting in some practice improvising Ecstatic Dance Waves.  The biggest challenge is the time constraint of 2 hours! I can't plan ahead, that takes all the fun out of it for me, but fortunately I understand phrasing well enough to create a good flow.  Never as good without an audience, but this one was good enough to post.

One of my best Ecstatic Dance sets. Improvised completely in the living moment, as always, following a delightful opening circle with a blue-lotus infused coconut milk cacao ceremony. I made the fresh coconut milk, infused the blue lotus and mixed in the raw cacao paste earlier in the day, and at least 40 people got to enjoy that. Easily one of the bigger crowds I've seen at Sundari. Everyone danced hard and seemed really stoked. Easily my favorite place to play in Puna.

The Whiskey Tango Foxtrot

This has become more and more significant a musical endeavor of mine since its inception in May of 2016, in essence, a comeback to my roots track, also a coming out of hiding...  and a stepping into the sun...

Lead guitar galore, a driving dub beat and deep bass pulsation, atmospheric effects and textures and a simple, bittersweet melody that stays with you for days.

Step Out Into the Sunshine

Born in New York City and raised on Long Island, Spiro was introduced to computer music by his high school jazz band teacher in 1989. He studied music synthesis and technology at New York University in 1991, and was a regular Wednesday night reveler at Disco2000 in the legendary converted cathedral on 6th Avenue known as the Limelight. He made weekly Friday night pilgrimages to Caffeine in Eastern Long Island, and his first Storm Rave in a Brooklyn tractor warehouse that year set him on the musical course that he follows to this day.

Seeking a more immersive music education, he moved to Boston in 1992 to study film scoring at Berklee College of Music. At that time, he experienced the Ultraworld and Primary events in the early New England rave scene. 

He returned to New York in 1995, and quickly became one of the early pioneers of the East Coast rave, house, techno, and breaks scene, with seminal releases on Caffeine, Definitive/Plus8, Grinning, and his own label, I.M.U.R.Me Records.

After a detour into the jam band scene in the early 2000's, Spiro was one of the first resident DJ's at Alex and Allyson Grey’s original Chapel of Sacred Mirrors on West 27th Street. He went on to become a founding member of Brooklyn’s mythic “Freek Factory,”  sharing stages with Bassnectar, Random Rab, and The Glitch Mob long before they were filling coliseums.

In 2016, Spiro relocated to the Big Island of Hawai‘i and invested eight years into the cultivation of a vast ethnobotanical collection, and the study of plant alchemy. Now, encouraged by friends, and inspired by the medicine and the land he stewards, he returned triumphantly to music production under the artist name Apollo Santo, blessing local dancefloors, private events, and online followers with DJ sets, live instrumental sessions, and impeccably curated mixes that span many genres.

Spiro's DJ sets are never rehearsed or prepared ahead of time, always generated in the living moment. Beyond dance floors, he weaves sound in ceremony, holding space for entheogenic journeys with his partner, a professional therapist certified in psychedelic-assisted therapy. Together they founded The Order of the New Eleusis (The ONE)—a sacramental plant medicine church devoted to healing, awakening, and remembrance.

Spiro is working on three full-length albums of original dance music, and new remixes for David Starfire, Savej and Dros. He is authoring what will be a groundbreaking serialized drama for HBO or AppleTV, and composing immersive ambient soundscapes for ceremonial and meditative spaces. His new musical works will be released on his new label Rhodium Recordings, available via Beatport, Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon, and Bandcamp.
