     In a flurry of melodic energy like only he can whip up, Apple Pips mainstay Arkist returns with two assured cuts that perfectly build on the strengths he has always displayed for killer production and mean hooks. While his previous turns for the label “Rendezvous” and “Fill Your Coffee” made a devastating impact when they dropped back in 2011, this new pair of tracks sees one of Bristol’s finest further broadening his sonic palette with a wild array of cues feeding into an undeniably fresh end result.

     “Whipper Snapper” comes loping in on a piano jazz refrain that instantly promises a one-of-a-kind jam that lives and breathes with the quality of true musicianship. The chords range and nudge with the natural lilt of a hand played instrument, while around it a peppy concoction of swung house keeps the groove moving. An ostentatious breakdown takes away all the immediacy of the track, only to rebuild it in a wholly new way led by a warm synth line and sizzling drums, all but leaving the hook of the start of the tune behind and charging onto pastures new. Some things in life though are too irresistible to not return to, and sure enough the climax of the tune is an effervescent return to that raunchy keys workout.

“Summer Shimmer” is a synth-heavy throwdown that rests on top of a steady-ticking arpeggio, live guitar chops & a crisp disco beat. Cheeky bass licks only accentuate the funk on the lead in, but it’s all a precursor for the dynamic twists and turns the track whips round, from bittersweet piano chords to snarling filter sweeps, starlit strafes to Moog-ish growls. Both wildly imaginative and utterly instantaneous at the same time, it’s everything you expect of Arkist but rendered in a completely new way.

     Fresh from his brilliant release on Aus Music ‘Walk The Walk’, Komon returns to Apple Pips once again to indulge his love of garage & house with a pair of utterly future-minded steppers that meld the fun-loving qualities of his productions with the most addictive kind of swing. 

     “Cosmic Jon” comes on tender at first as delicate trickles of melody and warm bass interweave around a simple kick, clap and hat pattern. Of course it can’t stay too civilised for long, and sure enough some rude bottom end grind comes bowling in and the beat starts twitching in earnest. It’s a set of drums that reside at the housier end of the garage spectrum, but shuffle and swing they do all the same, while all around a rich tapestry of keys inject the soul into the track. With some choice spiritual guidance intoned in the vocal sample, “Cosmic Jon” makes for a truly uplifting slice of contemporary 4x4 business.

     “Fluorescent” represents the ‘Blim at his most jovial, tapping into the pure pleasure hit of sun-kissed house music whilst bolstering the more immediate elements of the track with subtle flecks of sound design and a deft application of punch and swing. While the main hook may take its time to reveal itself through the swathes of dubby texture, once it hits it feels like an overwhelming swell of good vibes. Even as the chirpy first refrain melts away into an ambient breakdown before getting switched up for an edgier tone, the fist-shaking vibrancy of the track refuses to let go.

     In the true spirit of diversity, “Past Present Future” plots a very different path into broken beats and experimental tones that engender a meditative headspace from the outset. The rhythm may be rock solid, but the plush chords that judder and stretch through a wealth of processing send the mind spinning in a myriad of directions. There’s a whisper of electro about the whipcrack of the drums, while the plaintive bass anchors the mix with measured precision, but truthfully the track surges into its own unchartered realm as soon as the staggered kick takes hold. By the time the delicate sprinkles of acid meld with starlit synthesis and reach ever further space-wards, the past reference points have become irrelevant and all that can be felt is the shock of the present.
