Led by Mr Gee, acclaimed spoken word artist and host of “Bespoken Word” on Radio 4, the Reprezent Radio Residency involved young people across East London taking part in broadcasting workshops to get their voices heard on the London spoken word scene. All broadcasting was recorded in the workshops and aired at 12 the following day on Reprezent 107.3FM

This poem, One Million Men, and More is a response to an Apples and Snakes Commission to commemorate WW1.

It is about the participation of Indian troops in that war, and who comprised the largest volunteer army ever with over 1 million joining up and up to half a million others later recruited.

Ten poets, one commission: to programme an hour of spoken word radio for digital station basic.fm. Armed with portable recorders and editing support, they are at liberty to collect anything at all – so long as it contains spoken word.

This month we have Poems from the Road from Robin Vaughan, a poetic journey down Britain’s A-roads and motorways, exploring the abstraction, violence, landscapes, and migrations that characterise our experience of the road. Discover a place where ‘juggernauts silence arguments’, sheep ‘split like dropped shopping’, and cars ‘fall from the sky’ or crouch low ‘growling at sheep’. Travelling from Fife to Bridgend, the M25 to the M62, the show brings together the poetry of twenty-six poets, including Luke Wright, Ann Hamblen, Mark Gwynne Jones, River Wolton, James Caruth, Clare Best, and John Arlott, among others. It also features an audio poetry collage and a multi-voice improvisation based on poetic tweets from the A-roads. The road can be a kind of ‘alien territory’, often ignored in the rush from A to B; this show is about reclaiming it for the imagination.

This month it's the turn of Helen East and Rick Wilson with City Fables, a rhythm-driven tale-telling poem version of London, from Helen East’s London Urban Underbelly performance, drawing story ideas from all over place that touch on the nitty gritty of what it is to be a city.
A mix of music, and soundscape featuring London and other city sounds, acoustic and electronic, environmental and synthetic.

Lydia Tomkiw was a Chicago-based poet of Ukrainian heritage. She was active from the early 1980s onwards, initially as part of a cult music/poetry duo called Algebra Suicide. After their demise, she forged a solo career until her untimely death in 2007.

Here she is reading at Covent Garden Community Centre on 24 May 1991, as part of a Small Presses
