If you could travel back to 130 million years ago, you might not be impressed with the earliest flowers.   Those early flowers were small and rare, living in the shadows of far more successful nonflowering plants. It took many millions of years for flowers to hit their stride. Around 120 million years ago, a new branch of flowers evolved that came to dominate many forests and explode in diversity. That lineage includes 99 percent of all species of flowering plants on Earth today, ranging from magnolias to dandelions to pumpkins. 

Later, in six lineages, flowers became more complicated. They evolved an inner ring of petals that became big and showy, and an outer ring of usually green, leaflike growths called sepals, which protect young flowers as they bud.  As popularly used, the term “flower” especially applies when part or all of the reproductive structure is distinctive in colour and form. In their range of colour, size, form, and anatomical arrangement, flowers present a seemingly endless variety of combinations. They range in size from minute blossoms to giant blooms. In some plants, such as poppy, magnolia, tulip, and petunia, each flower is relatively large and showy and is produced singly, while in other plants, such as aster, snapdragon, and lilac, the individual flowers may be very small and are borne in a distinctive cluster known as an inflorescence. Regardless of their variety, all flowers have a uniform function, the reproduction of the species through the production of seed.

SO...It has been almost a year since I have thought about playing any music,
and have barely even visited SoundCloud in the interim.

Indeed, it has been that long since entertaining any diversions at all,
as I have been engaged with serious health issues concerning my son.
After a lengthy hospital stay with an aggressive infection,
resulting in pneumonia and requiring surgery,
he is finally to the point to where he is strong enough to stand
and take a few brief steps.

So, I have only recently allowed myself enough space to contemplate music 
...at least for a brief spell, or so long as it can last.


Here are simply a random collection of instruments
and the suggestions they evoked for me upon hearing them.

Mood Exhibit - Spawling Vistas

SONGS OF HOPE FOR A NEW REALITY.

This work consists of three songs.
 
The first song is for a baritone voice and represents that it is sung by a character who is a journalist and tries to give an overview of the many global crises and conflicts that are currently haunting us and causing "perplexity in an uncertain world".

The second song, for a contralto voice, represents that it is the reply given by a female character who is an anthropologist, to the previous journalist arguing that we can only save ourselves if we start from approaches based on ethics and anthropology to build a "critical conscience of our species" that allows us to create a new global reality where all human beings have a dignified and comfortable life.

The third song is a fugue for four voices (for soprano, alto, tenor and bass) and represents the well- meaning people who have honestly understood what the situation is: it is only possible to overcome this "perplexity in an uncertain world, creating new global reality for all.

At the end of this introduction I attach a PDF with the lyrics of the three songs. I put the original version in English and also its translation into Spanish.

The music has an initial inspiration in what we could call musical styles of modern popular music, but with the aim of reaching a final composition of a more abstract and artistic nature. Regarding the musical production, as is usual in my works, the score of the different musical parts is performed by computer software, specifically in the instrumental parts I have used the synthesizer (granular and spectral) called Padshop 2 and also samplers from the VSL (Vienna Symphonic Library) that, although in this library the instruments have acoustic timbre, I have given them an electronic music treatment. But the most peculiar part is the one corresponding to the voices in which I have used the VOCALOID 6 software that has a singing synthesis technology that produces singing voices that are very realistic and with the ability to articulate words and that has been, initially , developed to sing in the Japanese and English languages.

As for the textual content of the lyrics of the songs, I have written it myself and I wanted it to start from the current global reality and to have, as far as possible, a projection in the general interest. I have been inspired by various texts that I have read lately and, especially, the book "El porvenir de la humanidad”  written by Eudald Carbonell i Roura, a Catalan archaeologist and anthropologist who has a long and important professional career.
