"If The Sea Would Ask Me" is the second full-length album by Canadian Rifles. Following on from his solo debut "Atoll" on A.V.A. in 2019 and a more recent run of EPs and collaborative releases, this new body of work sees the Porto-based musician's style shift, further contemplating minimalism as his core approach. Heavily anchored by expansive overtones and lavish slow-moving melodies, all five compositions carry a monolithic yet delicate presence. It is a work of masterfully exercised restraint and quasi-sacred beauty. Of trauma and broken promises. If the sea would ask me, would I follow?

“In the back of the throat there is a subterranean river that holds you, humming towards the cave’s end. This end is a liminal mirror reflecting the contours of your voice. The mirror shows how —when brought to certain aquatic depths— unheard of limbs and wondrous branches are prone to sprout from your voice. Blind sibyls, your voice’s branches climb towards the surface, in search of light and warmth. After the great drought, your voice’s limbs persevere. They stand naked, pulsating in the purple that lies underneath grey. Your voice’s limbs erect themselves as monuments to air, kin among the deafening night. The water level is now only tall enough to keep your voice’s core below. Your voice, fed by the swamp, cradled by duckweed, wrapped in horse tail, has become a secret organ. Your voice palpitates and releases twin echoes that undulate, to smoke’s rhythm, in the afterglow. Intricately connected by labyrinth to soil and moon, through the water lilies’ roots, your voice weaves an underweb that flickers like the eye of a flame. Your voice sediments the entwined veils of miracle and prayer.”

Alter is proud to present the debut full length release from devotional music outfit Unstern, a collaborative effort between deep ambient artist Arzat Skia and prodigal pianist Leo Svirsky.

Co-mixed by Swedish electronic music luminary Civilistjävel! and mastered to tape by Stefan Betke, the album features lush electronics, two pianos refracting across the stereo field, processed recordings from the Peruvian Amazon, bowed percussion by Greg Stuart, alongside strings and renaissance meantone organ recorded at Orgelpark in Amsterdam.

The results are an abundant audio illusion where what seemingly repeats slowly over time morphs in a manner where the destination escapes the departure point with extreme discretion, a reverent nod to Morton Feldman’s compositional method of “Crippled Symmetry.”

Throughout Es Geht Der Tag there is a muted, refined melancholy imbued with a constantly fluctuating pulse which generates a sense of temporal disorientation, leaving the listener lost in a strange yet not at all unfamiliar sonic labyrinth. It is a journey whereby a glorious subtle tension exists between the grandiose and the restrained.

This is environmental music, not in the sense of capturing nature itself, more with regards to an unfolding of audio elements which move in a manner in tune with the multitude of flows in the world.

Unstern’s Es Geht Der Tag is a deep mental journey, rich in subtle transcendental tendencies and psychic liberation.

Martina Claussen has been active as a composer, vocal artist and Professor of Voice in Vienna for many years. After many collaborations and appearances on some excellent compilations she's arrived at her full debut album, a project we're very excited to be part of as Forwind reaches its thirtieth release.

Verwoben (Interwoven) is an engrossing, intricate album of electronics and electro-acoustics with Martina’s voice being the primary sound source for most of the compositions. The five tracks were crafted over several years of experiments, recordings and live performances before finding their final form, with Martina's production and sound design skills shining through in the innovative results.

Packed with movement and dynamics, Verwoben swerves between the apparent, abstract and engagingly abstruse via pensive electronics, contemporary rumblings and harsher sections all swirling around the home base of Martina’s voice, that always lends the album a warmth even as the sound moves further and further out into more shadowy and desolate spaces.
