This is an extract of the Offen Music Outsiders show recorded for my dear friend Vladimir Ivkovic. Recording issues lead to a failure on The Other Side which could luckily be substituted by this sonic offering. Enjoy whilst you still can!

Oren Ambarchi 'Quixotism Part 5' (eMEGO 202)

In this mix, Concepción Huerta (@cncpcn) combines rhythmic music with abstract sound processes. She pulled Ecuadorian and Peruvian Cumbia tracks from old cassette tapes with a 4-track recorder, adding a layer of materiality. 

A pinch of reverb leads into Pintura Roja's chicha classic 'Yo Soy La Cumbia', shrouded in a haze of distortion. The songs featured here sound like they were channelled through the bowels of a dusty mixer with its input volume indicators in the red. It's more of a soundscape than a selection of individual tracks and calls to mind different images; perhaps that of a festival hall or a block party where one staggers around intoxicatedly between the crowd and the soundsystem.

Concepción Huerta is a multidisciplinary artist from Guadalajara, Mexico, whose approach to sound reflects on the relationship between silence and noise, political space, and sound as a means of expression. Her work includes installations, spatialized concerts, speculative narratives, and immersive experiences. She is a solo performer as well as a member of Amor Muere, with Gibrana Cervantes, Camille Mandoki, and Mabe Fratti. Her recordings have been released on Static Discos, SA Recordings (Scrawl), Aurora Central, and Umor Rex. Her most recent release is entitled ”The Earth Has Memory” (Elevator Bath, February 2024).

Diar Storm, Lost Boy 1984, Play Paul present a modern form of Dark Wave Electro that is, equal parts stroppy and sexy. 'Everything So' emits cathartic steam as vibrant synths burst with bittersweet chords and jagged staccato tones.
'Tainted In The Sun' by Niv Ast kicks off with a Manchester chorus beaming out over stroppy power chords.
Gary Numan’s cross-continental hit 'Cars' from 1979 has been covered, sampled and reworked from vastly different pockets of the industry. Now - Laroz presents a rejuvenation of ’Cars’.
'Infinity' by Budakid is a journey in the truest sense of the word. Through an effervescent bass sequence, clever filter control and kinetic drum work, Budakid generates consistent motion from start to finish.
'Falling For You' by Komilev dials in that Panorama vibe packed with effervescent drama, soul and sass.
'Rompe Disco’ by Alex Medina bumps like House and glistens like an Italo whilst also exuding the moxie of Reggaeton.
'Foreign Affairs' by Micropacer follows with more early 80s flair.
Pole Position of Brunch In The Park Barcelona fame channel their complementary energies into 'Diamonds'; a recording inspired by Electro House that deftly straddles 80s New Wave, Prog and Indie.
Moodymanc's 'Joy' twists Philadelphia soul sounds into a peak time house monster. Now re-edited for modern times in a special Breakbeat version.
São Paulo based Renato Cohen fires up his arsenal of analogue gear and adds a bright and burly Italo cut with ’Lemon Key’.
Zeynep Erbay’s ’Neon Palm’ sits comfortably alongside modern Indie Dance, Italo Disco and House alike.
Slump Recordings boss Baby Rollén’s ’Feeling Mumbled’ Remix is an ultimately playable DJ tool; one that renders an after hours sunrise as chords bounce of the tracks surface like rays of light while tight, nifty shuffles interlock with a bouncing bass line.
Austin Ato fleshes out some deliciously hallucinogenic Italo synths in his Remix version of ’Super Cool’ by Made In TLV.
’Acid Infatuation’ by Levantine is a sound that occupies a sweet spot between Eurodance and Italo.
Black Hawks of Panama steps in with ’Wrapped’.The ingredients are simple: a slapping disco kit, Alpha Juno, zesty guitar licks and an anthemic vocal. The result is a contagious Italo march that burrows deep under the skin; put simply - a slice of pure rapture.
'Good Times' by Renato Cohen sparks things up with bright, muscular drums that pave the way for a rasping bass line - a killer DJ tool. Raw energy is spat out while snares clash and vocals march along with an intensity that doesn't let up.
Captain Mustache’s ’Diavola’ flexes low-mid tones warble in lock step with strapping drums and an earworm synth line.
’Heart Life' by NEAT adds a further facet to the compilation with an allaying Italo-tinged groove.
In ’Neonim’ by Laroz, a gently jagged bass line bubbles away, creating a buoyant bed for expertly crafted drums which pop out with expressive alacrity. Dulcet piano tones form a bond with amber-tinged synths as warming soundscape is developed.
James Curd throws a dart straight to the dance floor with the jazz-tinged House jam ’Feeling Mumbled’ built from a classy palette of samples.
Sandhog closes the album with the highly memorable recording 'Berlin' that speaks to the power of simplicity.

I discovered Roy Ayers early in my musical journey. He’s an artist who had a huge influence on me, and over the years, I kept realizing just how important his career was to the history of music at large. 

From jazz to jazz-funk, jazz-fusion, disco, boogie, and even his influence on hip-hop & house—his impact is undeniable.

Today, I’m incredibly moved to see how much he inspired DJs, producers, and musicians across generations. But more than anything, it’s the universal love for him that stands out. Everyone loved Roy, and I think that’s what makes him such an important artist.

I became truly fascinated with his work the day I watched his live performance at Ronnie Scott’s, during the famous Battle of the Vibes. That’s when I realized not just his incredible musicianship but also his sense of humor. He had this incredible emotional range—his music could make you cry, laugh, or dance, sometimes all at once. That really struck me, and from that moment on, I started diving deeper into his music.

Over the years, my passion for his work grew. I started hunting for rare records, original pressings—until one day, I had the chance to see him perform on a rooftop in Brooklyn. He was already past 75 at that point, already fragile, but still so magical. 

Watching him play live as the sun set over the city is an image I’ll never forget. I remember bringing my original pressing of Roy Ayers Ubiquity with me, hoping to get it signed. But I was too shy, too in awe of the moment. It’s a small regret, but also a memory I’ll cherish forever.

With this mix, I wanted to pay tribute to him, as he passed away just a few days ago. 

I decided to take a chronological approach—starting with his debut album West Coast Vibes, moving through his time as Herbie Mann’s vibraphonist, then into his solo work and his years with his band Roy Ayers Ubiquity. From there, I included tracks from his 80s period, some unreleased material released by BBE, and even a few collaborations with Fela Kuti, Wayne Henderson, Guru & Erykah Badu. 

I chose to close the mix with Remember to Remember by Rick Holmes—it felt like the perfect closing theme for this tribute.

May his soul rest in peace and his music lives forever. 

Please note: I deliberately chose not to include his work as a producer for other artists like Sylvia Striplin, Ladies of the 80s, Bobbi Humphrey to name a few, except for Daylight and Remember to Remember. Same for Coffy as this one was a movie soundtrack and not a solo album. 

I also left out most of his collaborations, except for his track with Guru, which felt too important to omit. Additionally, I didn’t include any remixes, as it would have made the mix too long. 

Maybe all of that will be part of another recording one day...
