Cenotaph of the Swallowtail (poem and photo) by Apryl Skies. Previously Published by Red Fez October Issue #50. This poem was inspired by an afternoon at Hollywood Forever cemetery. I spent a late summer afternoon with Monique Hayes absorbing the inspiration from the warmest most intoxicating star, the voices from above & below, incense and a most beautifully inappropriate blue sky. We visited the dearly departed Ramones, met Vampira - Maila Nurmi, searched for "Bugsy" in the Mausoleum, strolled the red tiles of the courtyard and watched a swallowtail nuzzle the tombstones of those who had histories we may never unfold. "In this world of confessional, first-person poetry, it is often refreshing 
to find a totally unique and divergent voice. Apryl's is a voice and style running along the lines of Neo-Romanticism and I use the term Romanticism in the classical sense, not the sentimental sense--yes, Neo-Romanticism sprinkled with a strong leaning toward Imagism and first person narrative, rather than first person declarative observation.
 
A lot of poets today seem intent on breaking away from the musical 
quality of poetry. Much of their work seems to bear more resemblance to flash fiction or simply prose with a metaphoric flavor. This is one complaint that can never be leveled against Ms. Skies. Apryl's style and delivery never fall into any of these categories. Her imagery and lyrical metre is consistent with some of the best lyrical poetry heard around these parts. And as she continues to grow and add to 
the many poems already circulating the various publishing outlets online and 
in print, we are fortunate to share in this growth and give witness to 
a gentle, yet compelling new voice."
