Felt like jumping out of the rut by joining OSC on its last two days! It definitely got my ass moving, though I wasn't able to dig into the sound design with as much nuance as I wanted (especially since the khs fx were legal!) Perhaps it's for the best. Today I bring some practice writing synthy rock and then noodling with it at dnb tempo. Sadly, I didn't give myself enough time to really polish it or solo over it, but I'm still happy. If the mix sucks that's my excuse :D

All sounds generated from 20 instances of ONE. Despite the name, it's... a polysynth. The saws sound pretty good and I would reach for this for chords and distorted leads. Though, creating all the sounds with it seems to make it feel a bit fuzzy and murky, especially when leaning heavily on the onboard FX and unison. A byproduct of using turbo hyper saws for every instrument!

Speaking of FX, most instances use both the chorus and delay. kHs' own Essentials, Slice EQ, Snap Heap and Multipass plugins are used in mixing, mostly some broad EQ and compression to make things gel more instead of using them as creative effects. Except on the drums, where I have kHs Disperser beefing up the impacts. It's tremendous.

When I accepted to write this work for the 1st Edition of Dias da Percussão Portimão, many influences seemed possible to be recovered from my musical past. Complementing the specific purpose of using rhythmic and harmonic elements derived from traditional Portuguese music (specifically fandango, pauliteiros, corridinho), I also ended up looking for other influences from my youth, namely rock music from the 60’s and 70’s. These influences are not obvious in either case. They were mixed polyphonically in order to obtain very complex rhythms from the overlapping of rhythmic elements of all these genres. Even so, the final result, with its rhythmic cells loops and their varied repetition, intends to make some subtle reference to all these memories that made and are part of my life as a composer.

Writing music often feels like an exercise in learning how to escape a trap I’ve set for myself, like creating a little world with certain rules that have to be broken in order to progress. Sometimes I imagine that it’s not me doing this but the music itself, like an autonomous AI thing scanning random bits of music in real time, trying to understand itself. As if programmed by a machine, the orchestra starts and stops, switches material, gets things wrong, tries them again – always manically searching for some kind of logical thread, a way forward and out, an egress.
