Our breath is the most readily accessible medicine available to us. There are many ways to work with our breath and this series is in support of your practice. These particular breath medicine journeys are inspired by my own practice that is most similar to Holotropic Breathwork. For me, the breathing is deeper, a little faster, only through the mouth and only through the chest. Many others can find great benefit through the nose or using the belly. Best advice... experiment and listen to your body. With love from the mountains.

Open Into Flame
 is a meditation, a prayer and a dance for personal and collective transformation. For the past month, I have been immersed in smoke from fires burning in the mountains to surrounding my home and from the hundreds of others burning nearby here in the Pacific Northwest of Canada/USA. The burning of entire towns, homes and livelihoods has moved me into tears and into deep reflection. What is our Earth Mother asking of us in this time? This music was chosen to tell the story of my own journey into this question. It's an invitation to open into your own flame and to support releasing, transforming and welcoming new beginnings. As Bība shares so eloquently in this mix, “It’s time for a change of skin. This shedding is underway. Snake shows us that this shedding is by fire. The skin burning away is a skin full of injustices, anger and violence. [The fire] is symbolic of moving away from the old ways and making way for the new. In these flames, our anger can now be seen, our shadow revealed by the glowing light. And in this fire now, it’s time to heal. At this time of great shedding, an energy channel is open- a line of light. This line of light is our lineage. Our path to awakening. This energy is open to all beings on earth to come into alignment with the unfolding mystery of our individual and collective evolution.”

[mix002] - This 75-minute journey was recorded in December 2021. The journey includes Native American musicians R. Carlos Nakai (Navajo / Ute), Primeaux & Mike (Oglalla/Dakota (Yankton) Sioux and Ponca & Dine Navajo) and Joanne Shenandoah (Oneida Nation, Wolf Clan, Haudenosaunee). As this breathwork journey was coming together, Joanne Shenanodah breathed her last breath in this life on November 22, 2021. Prayers to Joanne on her journey into ancestorhood. Also included in this mix is a favorite for breathwork - Deya Dova’s Ancient Creation Mother - recorded on the edge of Kīlauea volcano crater on Hawai’i’s Big Island.

Recorded Wednesday, August 31, 2022 @ Burners Without Borders, Burning Man 2022, Black Rock City(built on Northern Paiute (Numu) land).

It was through an invitation to Burning Man from the Burners Without Borders camp that first inspired my "yes" and subsequent journey to the Black Rock Desert. This was the first of three sets I played at the camp - this one being a one-hour morning prayer and meditation that anchored in the vibe for a yoga session that followed. Apukuna - Burning Man 2022 Morning Prayer Ambient Set @ Burners Without Borders

One hand on the controls and the other hanging on tight. DJ'ing on top of a fluffy pink bunny at 5mph down the streets of Black Rock City shortly after sunset was one helluva ride to remember! Wide-eyed and big-eared BRC residents hopped on board as we made our way out to the open playa. The crew pulled up to a lioness with a human torso blowing fire out of its paws and I rolled out this playful side of the Apukuna sound. Bounce, smile and bounce some more friends. Apukuna - Live Remixing Microdose 01 (Sharing the Vibe 3rd Anniversary Set)

The theme of the 2023 edition of BOOM Festival was Radical Love and I was inspired to curate a mix that would invite the listener to embrace all of oneself. A few hundred beautiful beings at the Prana Shala received the journey and it included the debut of the ambient remix by @intiche of my new singer-songwriter productions as Jon David (@jondavidmusic). The remix of 'I Am' seemed to find a magical placement following the words of Ram Dass and the musical genius of Jon Hopkins and East Forest.

I couldn't have imagined a more dreamy European Apukuna debut than this night here! A few hundred beautiful beings welcomed in the evening and became a part of my dream. The night offered some valuable wisdom on just how DEEP a dancefloor can go when the people who show up are holding the space with abounding hearts, clear intentions, and immense impeccability. For more than half of the two-hour set, the radical love dancers held their attention and focus into the center of the dancefloor. Everyone became a facilitator. This was Radical Love at its finest. Dreaming the Dream at Dreamersland!!! This cacao-infused festival in Poland was as special as it sounds. Shared a lineup with Porangui, Ape Chimba, Estas Tonne, Janax Pacha and many other magical-music-makers. This was the first of two Apukuna sessions… an evening silent disco with a delicious opening of Iyakuh & Helen Knight's ‘Mamacoca’ infused with Maywa and Kora and followed by the angelic root chakra frequencies of Skysia and Sommer Love's ‘We Are Light’. Might just be the most involved dancefloor journey to have emerged from the @apukuna sound! What a magical evening. There was barely a moment where 4 decks weren't all flowing at once and it was a true highlight to introduce Richie Hawtin's Plastikman to the medicine icaros of Shipibo maestros and Ape Chimba!!! Plastikman's Kriket (1994) was a formative sound for me and this live remix helps tell some of that story of my journey since then. Holding the Dance Wave together was my first live collaboration with Blutopia (@blutopian) who brought his synths, flute and guitar to help open and close the journey and fill the interludes. Integrating live vocals (@jondavidmusic), percussion, and shakers, we journeyed deep within, and came out renewed, transformed and connected. Soooooo MUCH LOVE to the dancefloor who nourished what became of this set. The collective vibe from the dancefloor makes what's found in this live recording impossible to reproduce in a studio! Found my happy place at 1300m on the side of Babadağ - a magnificent mountain rising out of the Mediterranean in Turkey. 'Apukuna' is a Quechua word for mountain spirits so sharing this dancefloor journey on the side of a mountain was exactly where I wanted to be. This evening set included live percussion and vocals and a whole lot of dancefloor fun. Big love to the community that came together at Beyond Music & Arts Festival. The 2025 Turtle Unity Tour was inspired as a connector – a unifier.

5 ecstatic dances in Canada and 5 in the U.S.A. over one month – a living bridge between people and across land – a way to symbolize and actualize the unbroken bonds between all humans – always there to be remembered, harvested, and celebrated.

The TURTLE arrived with this vision (inspired by the unbroken land of "Turtle Island" -- the name given to North America by First Peoples). 

Turtle is a perfect symbol as the cold of winter descends. Just as Turtle withdraws into its shell for introspection, Ecstatic Dance invites us to go within, to rest, to reflect, and to re-emerge, anew, whole, ecstatic.

This is the dance of the Turtle.

Apukuna is a visionary DJ and musician whose musical offerings transcend the ordinary, creating powerful, heart-centered journeys that ignite dance floors, guide ambient sound journeys, and deepen breathwork sessions. His distinctive approach to DJ'ing relies on looping, live remixing, live vocals, and digital percussion to craft unique and improvised experiences.

Known for his ability to blend sacred music with soul-shaking movement, Apukuna's journeys help to heal, uplift, and guide transformational experiences. He describes his creations as a ‘movement, a meditation, and a prayer for an awakening heart’.

Apukuna is also singer-songwriter Jon David (@jondavidmusic) and an adept presenter and workshop facilitator, delving into the realms of conscious communication, community-building, and food.

WHAT IS "APUKUNA"? (artist statement)

"Apukuna" is a Quechua word meaning 'mountain spirits'. Following an apprenticeship into Andean cosmology, I chose the name to honor the people, the wisdom, and to invite deeper appreciation for their sacred relationship to land, mountains and the unseen. This relationship is available to all of us who walk this earth and is where much of my musical inspiration emerges."
