You'll never guess who's returned from the shadows yet again (NO PUN INTENDED) with another chip-based tribute to a Japanese folk duo.  The Hayashi Brothers - Ryunosuke & Naojiro (currently 33 and 30 respectively), hailing from Sado Island in Niigata (east of the Sea of Japan) made their professional debut nearly 2 decades ago with what we're about to experience after being selected by a major music company during their auditions as one of 5 finalists from 37,000 applicants, thereby being awarded this honor.  Also, their first-ever album on which this was released, "Enpitsu de Tsukuru Uta" was one of 4 major studio albums they've recorded until finishing off with a brand-new recording of THE VERY SAME SONG.  I remember hearing this on Fuji TV during my middle school days around that time, and has been warbling around in my subconscious ever since...therefore, ISN'T IT OBVIOUS?! - "Welcome to NES-Land" (or Famicom-Land e Youkoso), Hayashi Bros!

Considering how many despise this Canadian post-grunge band with a passion (refer to this blog for more info, since I'm not going to waste any precious text space with it - http://observer.com/2016/01/nickelback-the-meme-a-complete-history-of-how-we-came-to-hate-a-successful-band), and best remembered in "memes" than anything

I've decided to once again compile my efforts into one unforgettable medley, showcasing 2 of their songs from "All the Right Reasons" (their 5th studio album from more than a decade and a half ago) - whose rather infectious melodies & high-energy instrumentations left me begging for more, personally.  Both revolve around, as Kroeger eluded "just nostalgia, growing up in a small town, and you can't go back to your childhood. Saying goodbye to friends that you've drifted away from, where you grew up, where you went to school, who you hung out with and the dumb stuff you used to do as a kid, the first love — all of those things..." (hence the former being a biographical) and being surrounded by the dangerous trials and tribulations of everyday life, only to be rescued at the zero hour by a miraculous occurrence (later used as the theme for the short-lived Discovery documentary series, "Surgery Saved My Life"; the ending theme for Wiper's "The Condemned"; and was featured in a few show ads - Prison Break, Season 2 & Battlestar Galactica, Season 3) - RESPECTIVELY.

A pre-Lonely-Astronauts Joseph Arthur, responsible for writing and producing (alongside T-Bone Burnett), was featured on his 2nd album Come to Where I'm From.  The Anton-Corbijn-directed-MV featured not only Arthur himself portraying 2 personas (one of which includes a tripped-out roomie with a fake 'moustache' and temporary tattoos doing yoga, playing Twister, etc.), and his friend Valdet Demiri decorating a scuplture. In celebration of the film's 25th anniversary, the prolific, titular song by which this latest cover is inspired - as well as the Tom Hanks film (in that NOT ONLY did he write & direct it, he also appears in it as the Play-Tone Records producer, and features cameos by his wife & son) - revolves around the rise and fall of the fictional 1960's pop-rock band The Wonders, as well as the usual 'romance heartbreak' subject matter that most songs from that particular time period invoke.

Although my quota's almost full on this account, I've managed to wrap it all up with at least 1 or 2 songs (NES-transferred, of course).  Disclaimer aside, I'm back with yet another cover inspired by that very same obscure '80s anime film I discussed 3/4 of a year ago - for those unaware, it's from Rintaro's "Harmagedon - Genma Wars", based on the late Kazumasa Hirai & Shotaro Ishinomori's original manga from '67.  This particular song was heard when Michiko Asuma (Jo's older sister) is harassed constantly by 2 random cops whose bodies have been possessed by Genma's twisted-ass followers, Zamedi & Zambi - hence the former's theme - but Jo himself ended up arriving too late, resulting in Michiko's unexpected death at the hands of those demonic bastards!  

Words couldn't express how gutted I was at that very occurrence...

For those that recall the '03 film adaptation of Marvel's DAREDEVIL, this is one of the songs heard during the end credits, and was written to coincide with the film (and the comic's) plot in terms of Matt Murdock, the blind attorney, vowing vengeance on the Kingpin & Bullseye after they 86ed the Natchios family.  The song also appears on the band's 3rd album "Natural Selection".

Hailing from his 4th album "Verities and Balderdash", this country folk classic centers on a initially-blossoming-yet-evolving father/son relationship and how their roles change throughout the decades, inspired by a poem by the late Harry Chapin's wife Sandy revolving around her also-late first husband & his son (John and James Cashmore, respectively).  No wonder it was only covered once by Ugly Kid Joe 18 years later, followed by a tribute version by DMC & McLachlan 14 years following that...but now, GUESS WHOSE TURN IT IS!

Hailing from their 16th and 18th studio album (in the UK and US, respectively) from roughly 4 decades ago - this was originally recorded in the late '70s as an abandoned reggae rock track for Some Girls - one of the Stones' previous albums around that time, "Never Stop".

It was then abandoned and reworked, however, under the tutelage of engineer Chris Kimsey at both Electric Lady & the ill-fated Hit Factory in NY, and was later used in various commercials - most notably Microsoft Windows 95 (also, who could forget that Bob Rivers parody?!) / Omega watches.

Although I'm not big on sports whatsoever - the iconic song on which this cover is based is commonly used for the New England Patriots' entrance theme...but I digress!  Hailing from his post-Black-Sabbath debut solo album 'Blizzard of Ozz' - Osbourne's song revolves around the fear of annihilation and anarchy during the Cold War, and is one of his best known and recognizable as a solo performer.  

Not only was the song rated 9th greatest guitar solo ever by readers of Guitar World magazine, it was also ranked 9th by VH1 on their 40 Greatest Metal Songs list and was named the 23rd-greatest hard rock song of all time also by VH1 in '09 - the highest placement by a solo artist on the list.

Anyways, here's one for all the couples and all Dirty Dancing fans nationwide!  By now, this hit should ring a bell or two, as it was heard NOT ONLY near the end of the film during Castle & Houseman's final dance before every other Kellerman's attendee joined in the bash - but also the short-lived '88 TV series and every other form of media associated with the film.  

And then, just a few months back - it hit me as always...what if Dirty Dancing had an NES adaptation?  CONSIDER THIS RELEASE YOUR ANSWER!

The Clan of the Cave Bear & Stone Fox) takes a cruise within the R.A.L.F. machine during his time at the NASA research facility when he was being examined.

My 2nd hard rock cover in a row, inspired by the same band that gave us "Chop Suey!" and "Toxicity" (Apyschalypsereigns2k19 – Systemofadown-toxicity-8bit) - except this time, it revolves around the business behind war, and how privileged politicians start them, but expect the poor to fight them to the very end, akin to Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Fortunate Son". Just like an earlier song "Boom!", this was also originally written in protest against the Iraq War...and did I mention this won the "Best Hard Rock Performance" award at the 2005 Grammys?! Geils Band hit about a guy's high school crush appearing in the centerfold spread of some adult magazine (HENCE THE TITLE), and his turmoil revolving around the feelings he experiences - his disappointment due to the girl's loss of innocence and immortal lust until the very end...HAS CROSSED OVER INTO "NES TERRITORY" courtesy of "None-Other-Than".  Enjoy, one and all!

Another month, another classic that's just hit the "NES-stream"!  

From their iconic album Revolver (circa '66), this song was described as an "acidy song" by the late Lennon, featuring lyrics inspired by the "also-late" Peter Fonda's (Easy Rider) comments during his and the Beatles' / Byrds' LSD trip that occurred the prior year, leading to an unexpected argument about how the composition should've worked resulting in McCartney's eventual departure from the studio.  Now I see why acclaimed filmmaker Robert Rodriguez described said incident as "a handful of unsolved Beatles mysteries"....but other than that, enjoy one and all!!!

Did I forget to mention that Joe isn't in ANY WAY, SHAPE OR FORM RELATED TO THE OTHER "JACKSONS"?

For those that recall the MTV franchise Jackass (the original show and the films continuing from it)...the first film features this grunge song by the West Chester, PA band CKY (Camp Kill Yourself, whose drummer is the brother of Bam) in the end credits after The Misfits' "Hybrid Moments".

Not only that, it's also on the band's 2nd album "Infiltrate•Destroy•Rebuild" - first recorded as a demo under the title 'Sinking Fast' before making a boatload of drastic changes.  Enjoy one and all, and expect another tribute in less than a week and a half!

Based on a recent, torrid relationship within which this band's late drummer, Vinnie Paul was involved - this ballad by the long-since-disbanded PANTERA, hailing from their 6th studio album "Vulgar Display of Power", was considered one of its best-known songs...that is, until the band's eventual breakup following their 9th & last album over a decade("Reinventing the Steel") by the late Abbott Bros., and forming another band Damageplan - alongside Pat Lachman & "Bob Zilla" Kakaha - leading up & prior to "Dimebag's" horrifying murder by a deranged fan in Ohio, and Vinnie's death in his Las Vegas home 14 years following that.  But...allow me to spare everyone the dreaded details and remind everyone to ENJOY THIS LONG-AWAITED TRIBUTE TO ONE OF THE MOST HARDCORE HEAVY METAL BANDS THAT EVER EXISTED (if another one).

For those that remember "You Can't Get What You Want ('Till You Know What You Want)", here's yet another hit from the eminent British musician - except that it made its debut half a decade prior, hailing from his debut album "Look Sharp!".  Did I forget to mention this very song was heard in the Farrelly Bros.' "There's Something About Mary", hence my budding curiousity?  Anyways, you all know the drill - ENJOY, ONE AND ALL!

Hailing from the legendary musician/composer's 7th album, "Trouble in Paradise" - this iconic song is a celebration of his native city, AND THEN SOME.  First off, despite being first considered a flop...NOT ONLY did it hit #110 on Billboard's Bubbling Under chart, it was also featured during the Nike campaign commercials during the '84 Summer Olympics (in which Mary Decker & Carl Lewis ran and jumped for dear life using their gear), and most importantly - in "The Naked Gun - From the Files of Police Squad!", during the Angels vs. Mariners baseball game when Drebin (#RIPLeslieNielsen) disguises himself as the umpire, to stop one of the players from killing Queen Elizabeth II...BUT I DIGRESS.

Regardless of where you hail from, however, ENJOY ONE AND ALL.

'Back once more with yet another entry to my repetoire for everyone today!  What better way than a tribute to an obscure '80s anime film - case in point, Rintaro's "Harmagedon - Genma Wars", based on the late Kazumasa Hirai & Shotaro Ishinomori's original manga from '67?!  The premise revolves around a band of psionic warriors from all over the globe, joined by a cyborg warrior by the name of Vega, made up of Transylvanian princess/telepath Luna, Japanese student Jo Azuma (and occasionally his sister Michiko), black N.Y. gang member/teleporter Sonny Lynx, Salamander (a Native American from Nevada), along with Asanshi, Yogin and Tao (from Saudi Arabia, India & China respectively)...faced with confronting and exterminating a demonic, apocalyptic being known as GENMA and his 2 possession-worthy servants Zambi and Zamedi!

What you're listening to is one of that film's themes, originally orchestrated by the also-late KEITH EMERSON (from the long-since-disbanded Emerson, Lake & Perler), who also served as its music director, alongside Nozomi Aoki - featured near the end when the main 8 finally take on Genma.  Did I forget to mention that the more-realistic character designs were the handiwork of the incomparable Katsuhiro Otomo?
