Mørbeck makes mighty meaty material. That much is clear, but what's also pretty cool is that he chooses to do it on his own terms. Beyond a loosie here and there, like the M_REC 12" from this year, he opts to release on own-brand labels, Code Is Law included.

The hourlong double EP T.R.I.P.S. is Mørbeck's most comprehensive statement to date – and, for our money, the best yet. "Virgin Suicide" is uncommonly brash, winching its way towards a killer bait 'n switch in the final third, but still retaining enough of the robust techno to mark it as definably his.

Adam Beyer’s Drumcode juggernaut attracts more fans and critical plaudits with each passing year. Holding firm on its future facing ethos, techno’s number one label presents a new volume in its acclaimed A-Sides series with 20 prime tracks to signify its 20th anniversary. 

Such is the volume of quality music Adam Beyer receives throughout the course of the year, releasing all of it would be impossible. Enter the blue chip A-Sides series: a chance for the quality-obsessive label head to issue a collection of outstanding tracks that couldn’t fit in their regular EP release schedule. 

With an eye on future talent, as much as the label’s established roster of heavy-hitters, the compilation showcases the full breadth of Drumcode’s multifaceted techno sound, equal parts inspiring and functional. 

Led by the stealth techno funk of ‘Nine of You’, Beyer’s deft collaboration with Mark Reeve, the compilation takes in exciting highlights from big guns such as Alan Fitzpatrick, Dustin Zahn, Bart Skils, Pleasurekraft, Luca Agnelli, Jay Lumen, Kaiserdisco and Gary Beck. 

The rich vein of form displayed by emerging techno talent is similarly given prime position. Rising DJ/producer Boxia makes his Drumcode debut, fresh from a well-received warm up set for the crew at the hugely successful Junction 2 festival in London, while the likes of Enrico Sangiuliano, Juan Sanchez, Ian O’Donovan and Timmo also drop fire, establishing their credentials as some of the most promising talent breaking through the ranks in 2016. 

Reinforcing the global scope of the label, artists such as The Junkies from Toronto and Layton Giordani from New York, prove techno is winning a place in the heart of the new generation of artists coming out of North America. 

Secret Cinema & Egbert – Maximaal - Drumcode - DC159

DC172 comes on behalf of Brazilian born Vinicius Honorio, a now London based producer and DJ who is making some serious in-roads amongst a new breed of techno artists. Having already released on labels such as Pig&Dan’s Elevate and dubspeeka’s Skeleton, the next natural step in his progression comes in the form of a release on Drumcode. 

‘Through The Darkness’ is a masterclass in darkened techno grooves, with each one of the four tracks managing to show off Honorio’s skill as a producer and just why he is firing on all cylinders. The release kicks off with ‘Walking Shadow’, a track that has been a key part of Adam Beyer’s sets at the tail end of 2016 and in to the new year. This tense, brooding affair has certainly garnered a lot of attention of late and it’s clear to see why. The title track ‘Through The Darkness’ is a much more of a stripped back cut, jam-packed with a haunting vocal hook, driving basslines and slick drums. This is one for the late night mischief makers. ‘Desolate’ is another hard-hitter, managing to perfectly balance that signature Honorio groove and pounding drums that adds depth to his productions. The release closes with the atmospheric ‘Out For Blood’, which is loaded with vintage rave stabs and weighty basslines – This one is meant to played in dark and sweaty rooms.

German duo Obscure Shape & SHDW drop three robust Techno tracks in their first full release on Rekids this May.

One of the most exciting acts in Techno today, Obscure Shape & SHDW are the founders of From Another Mind - the label and party series making waves in South-Germany. Aside from Rekids, where they remixed Radio Slave’s ‘Vision’ last year, the pair’s abilities in the studio have seen them invited by Slam for two separate remixes of Monoloc and Envoy on Soma, with more projects to be announced.

‘Himmel Und Erde’ is a cavernous cut boasting colossal kicks and skipping percussion before a tantalising melody comes into play. ‘Am Ende Der Welt’ is more deep and atmospheric in comparison, blending dusky percussion with echoing synths until ‘Gefallene Engel’ demonstrates syncopated drums and an otherworldly hook that conjure up a mesmerising aesthetic to conclude the release.

"In 2013, when I was in the Hardtechno / Schranz music scene, Monegros promoters asked me to play together with Instigator a special 170bpm 1 hour hardtechno set for the festival (yes, I was really hard before... ). Monegros was, for me, something like a dream. Playing in the middle of a Spanish desert was insane. So, I asked my girlfriend to come with me as she usually does to celebrate it and enjoy the party as much as possible. Usually, for us, celebrate a party is about drinking and dancing (and playing the dj set of course).... But, this night I (and she) did not drink at all... why??? Because 2 days before the festival we learned that my girlfriend was pregnant... So, even if it was one of the best party in my life, as a serious future daddy, and to show as much solidarity as possible, I only drank water on Monegros... It was a magical moment anyway and we celebrated it for the first time as three and not only 2 (Amalia, my daughter, was probably dancing during the whole night too... )” - Greg Notill

“So I had my very first gig just 1 month after I got in touch with music production and DJ’ing. I was living in Malta at this time and and didn’t really know how all this works. The club I was supposed to play was a reggae club originally, not prepared for this as the gig was part of a charity event and didn’t have any equipment for me to use, so I had to head back home and get my Ableton Push (my only hardware at this point) and come back and play my 1 hour set with it. Luckily I had done this a few times as I had no other controller at this time and it wasn’t too difficult for me. Everything worked out fine in the end and people were dancing and having fun. I will never forget the adrenaline flushing through my body when this guy came up to me and asked me, what I am going to use for my gig and pointed to my empty hands though.” - Vince Weyn
