‘Vicissitude’, the debut EP from Los Angeles-based producer Lag Switch, to be released on Parisian label Abîme, is a record that tells the story of light and dark in which those two collide within a single entity.

On one side, there is the harrowing sound design, the monstrous textures and the overall lugubrious ambiance throughout the record. It depicts the bleak existence of a solitary creature, repulsive yet confused, steadily dragging itself through a barren wasteland leaving pain and suffering in its wake.

As the name of the record suggests, its other side is infused with hopeful and scaterred chords progressions paired with elegant motifs. While obscured by a thick layer of dark, desperate matter, a powerful light seeks tries to bring order to the underlying chaos.

When taking a closer look and immersing oneself in Vicissitude, the apparent contradiction between those two fades away, and we’re let with a brilliant depiction of one’s humanity’s oldest story. The creature, despite its unrestrained nature, reaches a benevolent understanding of itself and blurs light and dark into a visceral manifestation of hope as the record concludes.

In this episode Steph speaks with Nichole Fitch and Christopher Adams-Cohen, two LA-based artists who’ve managed to make their individual creative practices collide in a bawdy spectacle of extravagance and deeply reflective eroticism.

Both growing up in Pasadena, the two artist have been friends first and collaborators second since age 12, finding each other in their shared appreciation for classical theatre, and a particular kind of aesthetic sexuality that imbues familiar forms with a new spirit of queer celebration. One is primarily a painter—whose often provocative and fanciful creatures have been popping up throughout LA over the past few years—and the other is an actor-director whose forays into playwriting have been presented in Berlin, New York and Los Angeles, leading to this current collaboration that began with a residency at London’s Soho Revue. 

With their current work in progress, Fitch and Adams-Cohen combine their love of camp and the classics to invade and transgress the canon with a kinky ballet about vengeful gay ghosts.

As Lion´s blood scaled serpent thrones, spectral amber angers radiant horror.

Fleshdevouring galaxy size reptile abominations, fester of the reborn angel of despair,
consume the endless nectar of Eden´s cycle putrid over and over again.

Pteratitans sub-electrical plethora mecha-animas, pitch black quartz shrine vortex argonauts.
Arcane egoNecrophagists, hyperflash ghost recoils, shattered narrow spastic arrow void-automaton.

After 6,001 years in hypersleep, the symbiotic 011668 / S280F emerge from their calcified cocoons using sound, sculpture, and dance to resurrect the remains of a decimated Los Angeles (Tongva).

Joined by the equally vague and ancient oracle vvxxii - the amphibious coven references the lost low-frequency technology of our celestial ancestors; both as a healing tool and as a portal towards the primordial depths of the next reality.

Through digital swamps and climate catastrophes, 011668 / S280F / vvxxii encourage swim in sync beyond borders and post language - illustrating and analyzing the effects of pollution on flora/fauna by embodying and animating the mutated spawns and their further evolutions.
