At Doc's drugstore, the Jets act as a barrier between the dangers outside and Tony, who is hiding in the cellar waiting for Maria, but beneath their cool act is simmering rage. A familiar number playing on the jukebox causes Riff's girlfriend, Velma, to have an outburst, which only worsens the tension.

Anita arrives to tell Tony that Maria will be delayed, but the Jets are angered by the sight of their enemy's girlfriend and are convinced that she is spying on them so she can help the Sharks take revenge on Tony. When Anita persists, the Jets take out their rage on her, and things escalate into a brutal physical assault which Doc arrives just in time to stop before worse damage can be done.
Instead of relaying Maria's message, Anita exacts her own personal revenge on Tony and the Jets by telling them that Chino has murdered Maria in a fit of jealousy. Doc angrily orders the Jets to leave his store except for a shaken Anybodys, and heads to the cellar to tell Tony the tragic news. This sends Tony over the edge, and he runs out onto the street calling for Chino to kill him too.

Anybodys intercepts Tony and attempts to get him to safety, but Tony is too distraught and only wishes to join Maria in death. He harshly sends Anybodys away. Meanwhile Maria, just released from Lt. Schrank's questioning and ready to run away with Tony, rushes towards him across the basketball court. Tony thinks he is hallucinating, but just as he realizes his beloved Maria is alive and well, Chino emerges from the shadows and fatally shoots him with Bernardo's gun.

Maria cradles Tony in her arms and reassures him till his last breath that they will still run away together, as the Jets and the Sharks race onto the scene, having heard the gunshot. Upon Tony's death, Action leads the Jets to attack Chino and the Sharks, but Maria orders them to stop and makes Chino hand her the gun.

Filled with anger and sorrow, Maria holds both gangs at gunpoint, fighting the urge to shoot down as many of them as she can before taking her own life. But she cannot bring herself to kill, and breaks down just as Lt. Schrank arrives. Not wanting the police to handle Tony's body, Maria asks both gangs to help, and they agree. Action storms away, unable to accept any truce with his sworn enemies. To the bafflement of the police, a handful of Jets and Sharks carry Tony's body away in a sort of funeral procession, while Maria and the others follow behind.

Tony and Maria are startled by the arrival of a heartbroken Anita, and they make a hasty plan to elope as Tony leaves to seek help from Doc. 
Anita is furious that Maria has spent the night with Tony despite what he had done, and reprimands her and urges her to leave him before he does more harm. But Maria's love for Tony compels her to remain faithful through all his faults, so much that she eventually moves Anita to emphathise. 
A weary Lt. Schrank unexpectedly turns up to question Maria about the events leading to the deaths at the rumble. Realizing she would be delayed in meeting Tony, Maria drops hints under Schrank's nose for Anita to go to Doc's and let Tony know about the situation.

Having fled the scene of the rumble, the Jets hide out around the neighbourhood while some had been brought in for questioning at the police station. A-Rab and Baby John get the drop on Officer Krupke, temporarily throwing the police off the Jets' trail.

The gang is lost and devastated by the death of their beloved leader, Riff, but find it difficult to deal with their emotions. Instead, they channel their anger into a hilarious yet unflinching satire of their warped childhoods which made them into the 'juvenile delinquents' they are, and the professional adults who are so quick to judge and dismiss them.

News from Anybodys and Tiger about Tony being hunted by both the Sharks and the police gives the Jets new purpose. Action, stepping into the role of  leader, mobilizes the gang in a plan to protect Tony and help him escape New York.

Chino arrives at Maria's apartment to the amusement of her friends, who think he just wants time alone with her. After they leave Chino attempts to tell Maria about what transpired at the rumble, but her overwhelming concern for Tony sends Chino on a rampage to avenge Bernardo's death, armed with Bernardo's gun.

As Maria reels from the news of her brother's death at Tony's hands, Tony sneaks into her room to seek her forgiveness before giving himself up to the police. Despite her grief and anger Maria refuses to let him go, and they fall into a fantasy world of their own making where there are no gang fights and they are able to be together in peace. However, there is no escape from their brutal reality.

As the rumble is happening under the highway, Maria's friends gather at her apartment to pass the time until the boys return. It doesn't take much for them to realize that Maria is acting very strangely, from her insistence that there is no rumble to her being all dressed up to go someplace. Of course, the girls don't know about Tony, so they deduce that she has finally developed feelings for her arranged future husband Chino, and they gladly entertain her fanciful behaviour.

In a derelict enclosure under the highway which runs through their neighbourhood, the Jets and the Sharks gather to witness the fistfight between Ice and Bernardo that will decide once and for all which gang rules the street, as agreed during their war council.

As the duel kicks off, Tony arrives intent on stopping the rumble entirely by making peace with Bernardo. His efforts backfire as Bernardo mercilessly heckles him, determined to trigger Tony into fighting him. Tony's composure crumbles when the Jets keep pushing him to fight back, and Riff furiously attacks Bernardo.

With all agreements off the table and hatred getting the better of both sides, the two leaders draw knives on each other as their friends cheer them on. Tony frantically attempts to stop Riff from killing Bernardo, causing Riff to fatally run into Bernardo's knife. Riff's death causes Tony to lose his mind, and he murders Bernardo in in a vengeful rage. In a frenzy, the Jets and the Sharks attack each other, but approaching police sirens end the fight before more lives are lost.

Both gangs make a desperate escape from the scene, but Tony is left behind. Coming to his senses and seeing both Riff and Bernardo lying dead before him, he is overcome with horror and grief. Anybodys reaches him just in time to spirit him away just as the police arrive.

At the end of a long work day at the bridal shop, Anita excitedly shares that she is looking forward to some private time with Bernardo after he returns from the rumble. Maria tries to get Anita to leave the shop first to no avail as Tony shows up early, making no secret of his love for Maria. Anita is distressed by this situation, but ultimately agrees to keep it a secret.

To deal with their worries over their forbidden romance, Tony and Maria spin a fantasy (with the help of the dress dummies around the bridal shop) in which their love is accepted by their families and friends - a fantasy which feels all too real to them as their play-acting turns into a 'wedding ceremony', and they make their vows to love each other until death.

Act 1, Scene 7: One Hand, One Heart

The Jets, their girlfriends, and Anybodys wait anxiously at Doc's drugstore for the war council to begin. With Riff taking his time to join them and no sign of the Sharks, the teens try their best to diffuse the tension with zero success.

Riff and Velma arrive, and he warns the girls to leave when the Sharks show up. Velma and her pal Graziella playfully brush off the danger, and mock Anybodys for her efforts to be one of the boys. Doc, the elderly and kind store owner, expresses his bafflement about the Jets' obsession with violence and dominance, and becomes the target of Action's fiery temper. Ice, the gang's steadiest member, gives the gang a pep talk on utilizing self-restraint to get on top of any situation. Riff chimes in on how to keep it “cool” and leads the gang and the girls in dancing out all their aggression.

Bernardo and the Sharks arrive, and Riff arranges a civil setting to negotiate the terms of their impending rumble. Tony's unexpected intervention radically alters the stakes, aiming at protecting his friends and the brother of his beloved Maria by turning the all-out gang brawl into a one-on-one fist duel.

Bernardo, however, intends to teach Tony a lesson for daring to approach Maria, but Riff determines that he must fight Ice instead. The rumble is set for the following night, and it is too late to turn back when Lt. Schrank busts their operation. He harshly dismisses the Sharks, and attempts to get the Jets to cooperate with him for his own reasons. When the Jets stubbornly refuse to divulge any information about the rumble, Schrank lashes out at them and disperses the gathering before storming out himself.

With the others gone, Tony lets slip the reason for his unusual behaviour of late. Doc realizes that Tony is playing at a very dangerous game.

After the dance at the gym, the Sharks and their girls head back to their apartment block to wind down. Bernardo is worried about Maria after the scolding he gave her for 'mixing' with Tony. Anita playfully chides him for being old-fashioned and so antagonistic towards their new life in the USA. Bernardo, stubborn as always, refuses to relent. After a colourful exchange with Anita and their friends which turns a little sour, he abruptly leaves for the war council with the rest of the Sharks.

With the boys out of their hair, the girls are free to carry on about the ups and downs of life as Puerto Rican immigrants. Rosalia, missing the familiarity of home, calls Anita out on her lack of loyalty to Puerto Rico. Ruffled after her tiff with Bernardo over the same topic, Anita fires back with the help of the other girls, singing praises of all the shiny new things America has to offer them while Rosalia counters with the stark reality of their unglamorous lives as coloured people in a white-dominated society. But all ends well as the girls get their emotions out in a lively dance battle!

Tony makes his way through the Puerto Rican side of the neighbourhood calling for Maria, heedless of the trouble he could get into. Alarmed, Maria rushes out to the balcony of the fire escape outside her room. Despite the calls of Maria's father from inside the apartment, Tony boldly climbs up to meet her. Finally alone together, the young couple declare their love for each other against all odds, and plan to meet in secret the following evening after Maria finishes work.

We are introduced to Maria, a lovely Puerto Rican girl who has lived a sheltered life under the watchful eyes of her Catholic parents and overprotective elder brother, Bernardo. It is closing hour at the little bridal shop where she and her best friend Anita work as seamstresses. Maria is excited to attend the dance at the gym that night, and unsuccessfully attempts to convince Anita to make the dress she is to wear more 'grown-up'.

Bernardo arrives to take Anita to the dance as his date, while his shy best friend Chino has to be forced into the shop by his friends to escort Maria. Chino and Maria are arranged to be married, though Maria doesn't feel any sparks flying between them. Still, her night out at the dance is to be the highlight of her time in America so far.

Riff pays a visit to Tony, his best friend and former co-leader of the Jets. But Tony's street gang days are behind him - he has left the Jets, cleaned up his act and now works at Doc's Drugstore as a shop assistant. Still, Riff needs Tony to give him a confidence boost at the dance at the gym that night when the Jets challenge the Sharks to a rumble. But Tony seems miles away - he shares that he's been having dreams he can't explain and feels that something life-changing is headed his way. Ultimately, he obliges and agrees to go to the dance, much to Riff's delight. Perhaps that something from his dreams is waiting for him there...

Act 1, Scene 2: Something's Coming

'West Side Story' debuted on Broadway in 1957 amidst racial tensions resulting from an influx of South American immigrants into the United States and regular reports of gang warfare on the streets of New York. A modern take on Shakespeare's 'Romeo and Juliet', the story is set in the rough Upper West Side neighbourhood of New York City in the mid-1950s.

The Jets, a street gang made up of troubled white teens led by the charismatic Riff, find their self-proclaimed dominance of the streets challenged by a gang of Puerto Rican teens called the Sharks led by the fiery Bernardo. 

The Prologue is one of the most iconic scenes in musical theatre history. The rivalry between the Jets and the Sharks is introduced in an extensive dance/mime sequence which spotlights Jerome Robbins' unique choreography. 

In our production, we have incorporated some original dialogue and an atmospheric soundscape over the score in an attempt to capture the essence of this scene without the aid of visuals!

After an increasingly heated exchange of heckling, attacks and counterattacks between the Jets and the Sharks, both gangs launch into a full-blown brawl in the street. The chaos is halted by the ornery Lt. Schrank and his muscle, Officer Krupke. Schrank's tolerance for both gangs is running low - he sends the Sharks away and gives the Jets a harsh warning.

But the Jets will not back down, not until they've won back “their” street from the Sharks. The gang leader Riff gathers his men - his lieutenants Action and Ice, A-Rab, Big Deal, Snowboy and the youngest, Baby John - for an emergency meeting. They are interrupted by Anybodys, a tough tomboy who aspires to prove herself as a Jet, but she is rudely dismissed.

Riff proposes a rumble: an all-out, decisive fight between the Jets and the Sharks to determine which gang will rule the street once and for all - but first he must meet his arch-rival Bernardo at the dance at the gym that night to set up a proper war council to decide the terms of the rumble. To do that with full confidence, he needs to call in his best friend and former Jet co-leader, Tony.

This is met with some disagreement from the hot-headed Action who feels that Tony has grown distant from the gang and is no longer a true Jet, but Riff affirms that once you're a Jet, you're a Jet for life. Encouraged, the Jets disperse to prepare for the dance while Riff sets off to find Tony.
