The vocals on this track remind me of 'Yeke Yeke' by Mory Kante,  whereas the rhythm sounds not unlike 'Safety Dance' by Men Without Hats. Strangely, it all works.


The album, 'Soft Breeze & Tsunami Breaks' by Ekova is well worth checking out too - very chilled.

Rave - Early 90s Oldskool Breaks DJ Set

I did the first version of this way back in 2001, having heard Orbital's Live mix, which contained samples of 'You Give Love A Bad Name', by Bon Jovi and 'Heaven Is A Place In Earth' by Belinda Carlisle. 

This version is from 2010 and is an edit of my breakbeat remix of Halcyon, cut up with the samples and overlaid with 'Fine Day' by Opus III - with a bit of TLC on the revamp for 2019.

Shouldn't work on paper but totally does in practice.

In part, a tribute to Electrofly records - a fantastic label which released some truly stunning music in the early to mid 2000s. 

The mix, which was done entirely on vinyl, opens with some nice laid-back melodies and then proceeds to build relentlessly throughout.

DJing Progressive House in the mid-nineties was almost as much about nailing the perfect mix as it was the tracks themselves -  the transition from one to the next. 

This set, comprised of records from that time - many from the early part - is both a reflection of that ethos, and of the sets I played during that time at nights like Bliss, FBI and Mitsubishi in the Bradford / Leeds area. 

I got a couple of emails about the first track. I remember hearing Last Rhythm overlaid with Corina first played by 808 State on the radio in about 1991 - I tried to recreate the concept for this mix.

This mix reflects a moment from that time spent in the North of England with the guys with whom I ran nights and DJ'd.
