20 Years Of Freerange - 5 x Vinyl Box Set LP

June 2016 sees Freerange Records celebrate 20 years at the top. The label, run by Jamie ‘Jimpster’ Odell and Tom Roberts, is marking the occasion with the summer release of a carefully curated and lovingly assembled 20 track, five vinyl box set featuring exclusive new music from associates old and new, as well as with a worldwide events series.

Over the last two decades, generations of DJs and dancers have gotten down to the Freerange sound. Initially that was a mix of sample-heavy productions incorporating live musicians, flirtations with the broken beat sound and some ground breaking fidget house cuts from Switch and Trevor Loveys. Then, and most enduringly, the label settled into a rich vein of deep house. Shur-I-Kan, Kirk Degiorgio, Milton Jackson, Trackheadz, Stimming as well as Jimpster ushered in this most recent chapter, and in turn the label has helped make household names of many more previously unknown talents from Detroit Swindle to Manuel Tur, Andre Lodemann to Tony Lionni. Wherever you look amongst the hundreds of EP and LP releases on Freerange, you will find nuance and evolution, dance floor sensibility and genuine emotional impact.

That same sense of timelessness characterises this new compilation, which is packed with great music from the likes of KiNK, Pittsburgh Track Authority, Kuniyuki, Kito Jempere, Soul of Hex, Clavis, Detroit Swindle, and of course Jimpster himself, as well as a whole host of other Freerange regulars. There are many highlights across the 20 track package including a warm and skipping house cut from Bulgarian live specialist KiNK, a typically slow burning and beautifully arcing epic from Andre Lodemann and spaced out jack tracks from classically inclined Liverpudlian Tony Lionni.

Big name stars like Detroit Swindle return in style with a robust and acid laced banger, the ever-underrated Milton Jackson builds something melodically magical and Pittsburgh Track Authority layer up majestic string stabs and rubbery bass into soul infused future music. Jimpster himself bolsters the whole package both solo and with Luv Jam as well as remixing Tim Toh, and on each occasion proves why he is one of the pivotal figures of the UK deep house scene.

Few labels make it to twenty releases let alone twenty years strong. Often doing so without making any real fuss, now is the time that Freerange Records deserves its time in the spotlight, and this compilation more than proves that.

Brazilian-born, Berlin-based DJ-producer Terr makes her debut on Erol Alkan's Phantasy with a superb new single titled 'Tale of Devotion'. A wide-eyed exercise in pure synth-pop bliss that channels the spirit of Giorgio Moroder's early disco musings, the glitzy track sees Terr deliver a stupefying vocal performance which lays the foundation for a contagious arrangement of cosmic electronics.

Terr's 'Tale Of Devotion' - which comes paired with a ‘Discomiks’ and dub rework from Norwegian maestro Prins Thomas - drops via Phantasy on May 10.

Growing up in Texas and the Caribbean, Brian Brewster became associated with music
at a young age. Starting out as a reggae, dancehall, and hip hop singer, it wasn’t until
2005 when he moved to Paris that he would become connected with electronic music.
After meeting dOP in the French capital he began to spend a lot of time with the trio in
the studio and in 2010 Aquarius Heaven was born. The sound particularly interested
Brian because there were fewer limitations in electronic music and it gave him room to
experiment. He was able to push the boundaries of sound to create something outside of
the box of the typical house and techno machine. Never forgetting about his roots in
music you can still hear the colors of the Caribbean in his vocals.
After relocating to Berlin his first track “Before U Go” was released on the Watergate 06
compilation mixed by dOP. Shortly after that his debut full length EP was release on
Circus Company titled 7 days. The follow up to 7 days on Wolf + Lamb even further
catapulted him into the spotlight with a dark and sexy music video that created a lot of
buzz in the music-blog world before the EP was even released. Since his quick rise in the
ranks of the world of electronic music Aquarius Heaven has collaborated with some of the
best in the industry including Miss Kittin, Ryan Crosson, Art Department, Mathias Kaden
and many more. He continues to build a strong body of work on some of the most well
known and respect labels such as Circus Company, Crosstown Rebels, Visionquest, and
No. 19 Music.
Shining brightly as one of the stand out vocalists and performers in the scene Aquarius
Heaven has traveled the globe and back performing at some of the biggest clubs and
festivals such as Panorama Bar, Rex, Space, Watergate, and Zur wilden Renate to name
a few. Always in the studio pushing himself to the absolute limit he continues to push out
a high volume of quality work with two upcoming EPs in the new year one on his home
label Circus Company and another on Rhythm Cult. Showing no signs of slowing down
you can expect to continue to see Aquarius Heaven at the top of his game as a staple of
the electronic music world.
