LAB017 represents the long-awaited return of Zed Bias to Aquatic Lab, this time in the guise of his seminal, futuristic broken beat alias, Maddslinky.  Hammerhead marks the first Maddslinky appearance on vinyl since 2012, and is accompanied by three dynamic re-interpretations from the extended Aquatic Lab family.

The original cut of ‘Hammerhead’ is a unique composition from an artist often associated with deep club anthems. A minimalistic excursion of dark atmospherics and whirring bass, this is Maddslinky reimagining the rolling spirit of early 2000s breakstep, in truly fine style. 

On the flipside comes the vinyl debut of Berlin-based producer Bardeya. This transformative version opts for a route of smokey and cinematic soundscape, before a crushing elephant dub march to the finish. Think Kanding Ray meets The Bug!

The digital release includes a debut Aquatic Lab appearance for Bristol based producer Sam Binga  and a return for Sydney bass crew Cliques, who follow up from their mighty vinyl debut on LAB016.

Cliques deliver a tech-stepper, detailed percussion underpinned with smatterings of wet delays and sinister reverb, switching up on the original with livewire rave anxiety and blown-out distorted bass.

Sam Binga lays down a dubwise footwork framework, the session is a cruising ride built for the Sunday afterparty. With busy snares, pulsing bass and vibrant stabs, this piece of kit is for when the sun meets the sea.

The pointed and growling ragga-style techno of A-side ‘Brain Scan’ is built on battering rhythms and dubwise sonic techniques, in the vein of an old school revivalist production. True to the roots, futuristic in scope.

On the flip, ‘Street Light’ is an equally abrasive bassweight roller, counter-balanced by Pinch’s cavernous and cinematic sound design. Strictly war sounds for the dance.

Rounding off the release is soundsystem meditation ‘Abducted’, an icy, gangster half-stepper drenched in thick reverb and melancholic DMZ-style laments.

On the flip, ‘Chro’ is given a poisonous treatment by dark beat architect Wen. This DJ tool is a hazy, languid take on the original’s shattered drums, ethereal paranoia and gangster bassweight. Wen’s version exudes a strong technical studio confidence layered with a crafty array of sinister sonic inclinations.

Cliques - Chro Preview

Aquatic Lab Sessions Vol 1 is a diverse package consisting of a selection of Aquatic Lab’s vinyl catalogue combined with previously unreleased material.

The compilation is constructed to be a collection of flowing styles, capturing everything from deep atmospheric textures to some serious sub rocking big rig material. The CD album features debut Aquatic Lab release by Caspa & Rusko ‘King George’,’ Colditz’ by UK Garage legend Zed Bias, ‘Nah Go Dung Deh’ by grime/dubstep star Cotti and ‘The Darkness’ & ‘Dark Passenger’ by acclaimed producer Seven. 

First up is a chilling future-scape progression titled ‘Ankoku Butoh’ by Moving Ninja; an organic journey that is unique in every possible way. Further on, the album showcases a wealth of underground sounds from the purist hard stepper ‘Wasps’ by P-Vans, to the dub inspired rhythmic 2-Step roller ‘Hollandia’, produced by Spherix.  New York based Australian producer Flash brings forth a hollowed out 4/4 dread bass long player in the form of ‘Right Here’ and  Kila Mega Giga Tera, a live group consisting of Distro  & Dub FX, deliver a kick-stepping, hard skanking piece of kit entitled ‘Subsonic’.  Vista comes with a sub shaking hybrid of moody minimalism in the shape of Neptune, and to round off the installment, bass scientist Twitch culminates the release with an original piece of wobble bass that is brimming with character and primed for the dance floor.

Since their debut appearance on Deep Medi Music, Truth has been hard at work on their LP and now it’s ready to drop. With the initial album sampler (LAB010 ‘Dead Silence’ & ‘Burglar’) laying the foundations, the second 12” LAB011 (forthcoming on 9th August) reinforces with ‘Juno’ & ‘Under Current’, two huge stepper grooves layered with more than enough weight for the shockout. The album itself ‘Puppets’ is a dense trip through moody big bass-driven soundscapes that include some of their finest work in the form of ‘The Fatman’, ‘Lab Rat’ and a VIP of the previously released ‘Terror Planet’. Also on the roster, Truth’s ‘Legion’, possibly their most sought-after riddim to date, which brings their trademark sound signatures of sweeping synths and massive amounts of bass fully into place. ‘Puppets’ touches on many styles such as the liquid offering of ‘Indigo Mood’, or the almost genre defying vocal lick ‘Don’t Explain’. ‘Puppets’ is a full bodied experience from start to finish – for darkly elegant dubstep it doesn’t get much better than this.

Truth have received DJ support around the globe from artists such as Mala, Skream, Joe Nice, Breakage, Hatcha and N Type, with their beats being dropped at shows from Club Love in New York City to DMZ in London, as well as featur- ing on radio stations BBC Radio One, Kiss and Rinse. Two comprehensive Europe tours and a string of gigs around Australia and Asia, have included an appearance at the legendary DMZ night in Brixton and the infamous Sub Dub in Leeds.

Truth’s big riddims have been quickly snatched up by a number of established labels such as seminal Deep Medi Musik and Skream’s Disfigured Dubs. Alix Perez has included his collaboration with Truth on his debut album ’1984′ and the group have remixed the likes of The Nextmen, Ms Dynamite and Silverclub.

Aquatic Lab's sixth release comes in form of a massive package from New Zealand' highly regarded bass production trio Truth.

Kicking it off is Terror Planet, a big room darkside journey displaying the lavish production techniques that have won Truth much accolade thus far. Terror planet is built around a tech intensive drum break, and fires up with a pulsating sub bass line that will destroy any dancehall. 

The flipside features Disappear, a meditative stepper that evolves to unleash a deadly sub, layered with a hoover edged bassline. Riding over are bold and bashy beats that will get any floor moving.   LAB014 is the third installment of Aquatic Lab's releases from South London originator, Cluekid. Leading on from his recent 'After The Storm' EP (LAB012), the 'Dolphin EP' is another display of Clue's well-heeled versatility and continual sonic growth, demonstrating why his extensive back catalogue of work continues to carry such high regard.
 
As Cluekid's most sought after dubplate in recent times, the A-side, ‘Dolphin', is simply a masterclass in stellar meditation. Combining the bold sense of musicality of his previous releases with an expertly crafted arrangement, 'Dolphin' is certainly the epitome of Cluekid's turquoise excursions. This melodic cut is as densely composed as it is meticulously stunning, as a serene melody ebbs and flows effortlessly with an undeniably unique deep-blue aura.
