THE PLASMA OF MANAO.
PLASMA, the first Manao EP for Kontra, is the culmination of years of sound and visual exploration, of learning within the environment of electronic music, of creative exercises that led to a new approach and a new narrative. His sound is the result of not being afraid of transformation, of ideas that are born from research. The result, however it may be, is accepted for what it is.
As a child influenced by his father, he grew up with the Latin rythms of Cuban and Puerto Rican salsa brava, and merengue hip hop; until his beginnings in electronica with hard
style and hard trance, through the discovery of the broken UK wave with drum & bass and dubstep, to his flirtations with R&B and hip hop, the essence of Manao has always been that of a shapeshifter: inspecting and striving to mutate. This is how he finally arrived, through the path of underground techno, to the original sound of electro born in Detroit in the eighties and nineties, and to the Miami base, which are the foundation of his current creations that fuse electro, techno and breakbeats, and they taste like dance, because their music is one hundred percent connected to the club life.
From this perspective, this EP gets felt in the bloodstream. PLASMA is the name that Manao wanted to give to a sensation: that of wanting to move to the rhythm of club music. It is in this work, and in this specific moment of his career, that he himself defines as in continuous transformation, in which all his moments and sound ideas converge and merge, generating a sound that for him is totally new and that, despite being influenced by European and American trends, it is built from its Latin American roots.
PLASMA also serves as a laboratory in which Manao experiments by meeting with other Latin American sonic producers. The result can be tasted in the track REALDEAL, produced in collaboration with Elektor, whose remix, by Bimol & Jauri, has also been included in the EP. For Manao, PLASMA is just the beginning of a journey that is still in its earliest stages; a narrative that until now begins to be told, to develop, and that he hopes to guide as it takes shape. It is about a sound, an exploration and a concept that align perfectly with Kontra’s manifesto and actions, and that is the reason why we are so excited to have this work that we present to you today.

"In 2003 I began streaming live via Livesets dot com. Over the years the number of annually archived shows has always fluctuated, but eventually it appears 500 has arrived. Sure the actual number of streams is probably triple that or more, but that’s harder to celebrate.

This 4×12″ Boxed Set represents the artists whose music I play the most on Bleep Radio. Literally and objectively played the most. I’m a big number crunching statistics nerd and have trended my own track-lists for years as many of you know. As a Canadian, far removed from where the music I like shines the brightest I consider myself very fortunate to have been able to meet with and play alongside a lot of these folks in person and not just via the stream.

Bleep Radio is expected to hit show 500 on May 14th which is when –if all things align– this release will be ready. The 500th show will consist of a mix of all of the tracks on this release by myself, plus…guests?

This release is isn’t just a milestone, it’s an open love letter to all of you whose music I play and will continue to play and support. Keep it wonky folks."

If you're out and about in Leipzig or interested in stylish innovative bass music streams/podcasts, you can't miss his Air Waves (@airwavesradio)shows at Callshop Radio (@callshopradio) and Radio Blau. With his contribution comes the guilt conclusion to our own origins. With his intuition and his massive repertoire of all bass music genres. Bassmusic is always the frame for him. Even if the mix is a bit more untypical for Rarry, he knows how to harmonize 4/4 beat with 90s rave and breakbeat. is background and bass influences are unmistakable. He also lets the local reference to the national Electro/Bass scene flow in with various tracks from labels from Berlin and Leipzig like @wetpakrec, @warningberlin, @clearmemory and @radiantlove.

‘Rough Edges' illustrates the perfect balance struck by Dez Williams, with intricate nuances breaking through barrages of raw kinetic force, all thriving on a sense of timelessness intersecting a feeling of immediacy.

'Colour Bind' cold fuses electro techno minimalism, with a fractured redux rhythm track accented by gooey bass stabs, visited by electro synth leads and dub tech stabs. The vibe is concise while feeling wide open.

'Rough Edges' is an epic stomper, built from rag tag random filter hits, a pulverizing wash of dirty monosynth in the low register, and a sinking atmosphere that descends into an electrified funky break.

'Bitofbaataa' immediately takes things interstellar. Dirty bass and expansive pads warp the senses, intersected by sliding melodic figures and a ferocious clap. Even this far in the cosmic realm, choice vocal hits keep things funky.

Sludgey dynamics take over on 'Saw Losers'. Menacing monster synths and huge crushing beats are paired with diabolical themes and resonant implosions.

'Never Perfect' wraps the EP on a sparkling effervescent high. Popping beats and a melodic bass groove slip and slide under some pedal tone synth siren calls. The elements are tied together with tranquil meditative string pads. The profound final statement to this release beautifully illustrates the journey and process of expression. Dez Williams reveals the mess and the magic in his process, coaxing depth and humanity from inhuman sonic palettes.
