A R Rahman - BGMs+Extracts

The genius Carnatic vocalist Madurai Mani Iyer (1912-1968), possibly the greatest exponent of live improvisation in Carnatic classical music, popularized this "English Note" composed by Harikesanallur Mutthiah Bhagavathar (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fNjl5w8Prw0) to showcase his autodidactic (self teaching) talent in expanding beyond his strictly classical training. This piece was extremely popular with an independence era audience that felt pride in one of their own "getting" western music while no Englishman could perform a Thodi alapana. 

Obviously as a Indian classical musician, Mutthiah Bhagavathar only composed the main melody, an incredibly catchy and hummable tune that would have worked in the best courts of Vienna. But Western classical music is about harmony layered over the melody and I was surprised that no one had taken a crack at taking this really catch melody and writing a String quartet around it. 

There were some interesting challenges. Mani Iyer clearly did not keep harmony in mind when he wrote the piece so there are places where the melodic sequence presents quite a hard challenge to harmonize, but all in all, I think it turned out okayish. 

Again, I am quite an amateur and It will be great if more talented musicians take this melody and set it to even better background scores :)

BGM Priya Falls in Love - Minsara Kanavu / Merupu Kalalu| ARR - Addicts

An adaptation of the 12th century English folk song "Scarborough Fair" (made famous by Simon & Garfunkel) in a Carnatic Ragam Thaanam Pallavi format. The raga is Kharaharapirya (or the Dorian mode in the original song)

There's a personal history to this particular song. In 1989, Anil and me were invited by Doordarshan in Chennai as part of a kids program named "Wonder Balloons" to play some "fusion music". He walked up to me about a day before the recording and asked me if I knew the song Scarborough Fair. I said I had no idea. He asked me if I could play Karaharapriya. I said yes. So he said - just play anything in Karaharapriya and when I play the song, just follow along. And that's what we did in 1989. 

Fast forward to 2016, I met Anil again after many years and we briefly jammed and relived that 1989 experience. But our crazy work schedules never really synced to the point where we actually sat together to do a proper recording. He did one rough version on his end and I did one take on the violin several months ago. 

And I decided to simply put both these rough takes together, add some extra piano where I felt it was needed (you can clearly tell the difference!) splice and edit a bit and just burden y'all with it.

Ishwar Allah - Flute Cover - (Collaboration with Kaushik Srenevasan)

Over the past year my increasing interest in Electronic music(EDM, House, etc) has led me to envision the interplay between Carnatic ragas and EDM synths and grooves on track. I came up with this track when I was playing some synthesizers in a western melodic scale called Phrygian. I found myself humming an alaap in Raga Sindhu Bhairavi soon as a couple of synth phrases were done. There seems to be such an irresistable pull between the beautiful variations of the raga and the repetitive nature of the electronic part underneath. Here is a version of me playing a violin alaap and swaram in Raga Sindhu Bhairavi as the first video of a new series, House of Carnatic.
