“DARKENING LIGNE CLAIRE” is a line, a fine line traced by a graphic gesture. A start, a beginning… and an end.

“DARKENING LIGNE CLAIRE” is the human ability to hide meaning instead of unveiling “sense” to reveal “answers”. 

We delved into Christophe Szpajdel’s photographic archive (he is both a logo designer and a forest engineer).  

Idea: synthesis requires mediation, a process that simultaneously builds and destroys…

 We selected a series of images that could evoke these notions, notions of  “DARKENING LIGNE CLAIRE”. 

…the intermediate passage between observation and design.
 We chose and printed – in a 24 cm x 30 cm format – fourteen shots in order to build seven diptychs.

We then named the art, borrowing the titles from Christophe Szpajdel’s past creations. 

Herein we accidentally found, hiding in every syntactical combination, a fitting narrative:

The selected photographs inspired Andrew Liles and Sven Fuzz Kristiansen (aka Maniac) to create music. 

To blur sound, to stretch and shrink time. 

Andrew Liles manifested the “DARKENING LIGNE CLAIRE” concept by manipulating Maniac’s narration of the titles above. 

Using only the sound of Maniac’s voice through various digital and analogue processes, seven tracks, each seven minutes long, were created. 

Christophe Szpajdel drew a logo for the duo - Liles/Maniac. 

Each track was lathe cut on a single sided transparent vinyl 10” leaving the blank side of the disc on which to engrave the logo. 

“DARKENING LIGNE CLAIRE” was born. 

“DARKENING LIGNE CLAIRE” is a collective and collection of ideas manifest in a succinct yet ambiguous work of multi-media art.

“DARKENING LIGNE CLAIRE” is an evaluation and the reasoning of graphic art, yet is beyond mere graphics.  “DARKENING LIGNE CLAIRE” is the discolouration of sound. The sonic and visual manipulation of the air around us. Recognisable yet unintelligible words. 

Words with and without “context” and “meaning”. 

Five copies of the “DARKENING LIGNE CLAIRE” box have been produced.

One for Christophe Spzpajdel: the Designer, one for Andrew Liles: the Composer, one for Sven Fuzz Kristiansen: the Singer, one for Archaeological Records: the Curator.

The exhibition, including a live performance by Liles/Maniac and a presentation by Christophe Szpajdel will start touring from December 1st, 2018 in Firenze.

Archaeological Records is a publishing house and record label inspired by music archaeology.

What is music archaeology? What 'music' has never been recorded?
Ancient music is poorly catalogued and remains largely unknown, but with research these forgotten forms, ancient melodies and instruments can be re-imagined and reborn. ‘Archaeological record’ is a term used in archaeology to denote all archaeological evidence. It includes the physical remains of past human activities as well as contemporary artefacts.  
 
AR is a project based on the belief that research into new and existing archaeological records can be analysed and theorised in new ways. This re-evaluation will be examined by researchers and sound designers, musicians and audio explorers who will develop ideas of unheard territories and uncharted channels, creating the 'new' from the 'ancient'.  
 
AR will focus on the history of music and the apparently unknowable.  
 
Inspiration for AR also comes from timeless sound experiences. For example, consider a natural cave and its acoustic environment, a bouche d’ombre with its eau verticalle and its stillness. The cave is in a state of continuous transformation yet its primary characteristics remain the same throughout the millennia. 
 
Early sound sources still in use also provide endless inspiration. The human voice or animal 'voices', their skins reappropriated into drums or their bones hollowed into wind instruments. Certain stones that sing when beaten and others sculpted and carefully positioned that make the wind sing their songs.  
 
For AR, exploring the history of sound is a mission beyond time, through ineffable dimensions. A mission that requires original observation and thought which will document and define 'archaeological sound'.  
According to the International Study Group of Music Archaeology’s “Meaning and Goals” :  
“... ultimately what was played in ancient times must remain in the dark of the past, and much fantasy is needed by modern musicians to imagine how melodies and rhythms may have been composed. Strictly speaking, only the sound of the instruments can be revived - these are the possibilities and limits of Music Archaeology.”
Determined to find new possibilities, AR supports projects that look at (and stress) the elasticity of the epistemological limits described by ISGMA: projects curated by researchers and artists together. Believing that the blurring of the genres is the most desirable approach when planning art projects inspired by science (or vice versa).
