Wood Ants on Thursley Common

I attached two JRF contact microphones inside the hollow of this wonderful old Oak tree to see if I could pick up any bug sounds. I was amazed to hear that it was completely full of Death Watch Beetle. They knock their heads on the tree to attract a mate.

This recording won the Coveted Wildlife Sound Recording Society's “Silver Fox” Trophy, the Non-Avian award and a first in class 2: Species in the 2012 WSRS competition. It also won first prize in the 'sounds of nature' category in the IWT/IARC/CIMES 2013 competition awarded by the International Federation of Sound Hunters.

Recorded with two DPA 4060s placed in the centre of the trunk to SD744T.

As yet unidentified fish grunts taken from the recording ‘mouth of the river Avon’ with frequencies above 1k filtered out and level raised over 20db to hear  grunts which were faint in the original recording. These are the sounds of bamboo in wind at Matapalo, Costa Rica - a straight ten minute recording. I recorded to a Sound Devices 722 deck using JrF contact microphones, attaching the mics to a pair of separate 7" diameter bamboo stalks five feet apart and seven feet above ground within a large clump of forty or so 50 footers. There was a tropical afternoon breeze, peaking in amplitude about every 4 minutes, and what a world of sound travels through those vascular inner fibers. The recordings are gorgeous and alive on their own but I expect to morph these into tectonic groans for experimental audio installations and musical applications.
