This December 1907 recording of "Auld Lang Syne," featuring vocals by bass Frank Stanley, is ranked #73 on the RIAA's 2001 list of the top 365 songs of the 20th century. It appears on our Phonographic Yearbook, 1907: "Dear Old Golden Rule Days."

In honor of HM Elizabeth II (1926-2022), who reigned as Queen of England for 70 years, we present this ca. 1891 recording of “God Save the Queen,” from our GRAMMY-nominated album "Etching the Voice," which presents the earliest disc recordings of Emile Berliner. Of course, when this was recorded, it referred to a different monarch, Queen Victoria (1819-1901), who reigned for 63 years. Press coverage of Queen Elizabeth’s passing has pointed out that her reign has constituted 30% of the period that the United States has existed since the ratification of our Constitution in 1788. Well, if you add in Queen Victoria’s time on the throne, the tenure of the two queens together have overlapped with 57% of U.S. history!

At 77 years of age, Fanny Crosby made her first and only record: A recitation of a then-unpublished poem, "Threescore Years and Ten," for a friend's phonograph, at the August 1897 Methodist camp meeting in Ocean Grove, New Jersey. This snippet presents a sample of her voice; the full recording, along with the story of identifying the records, is told in our upcoming release "Waxing the Gospel: Mass Evangelism and the Phonograph, 1890-1900"

Swing Low, Sweet Chariot by the Standard Quartette (1894)

Sample the selections from our upcoming EP, 4 Banjo Songs: 1891-1897. The selections in this medley are 1. Haul the Woodpile Down (ca. 1893–94), 2. Never Done Anything Since (ca. 1892–93),3. A New Coon in Town (1897), and 4. Keep in de Middle ob de Road (ca. 1891). Asbury was an African American banjo player, and these may be the earliest examples of minstrel-style banjo playing on record. The 7-inch 45-rpm EP is packaged in a gatefold jacket and includes a 16-page booklet with musical and biographical notes by Grammy-nominated authors Richard Martin and Ted Olson. 4 Banjo Songs will be released May 4.
