Barcelona producers Velmondo (Hivern Discs) and Priorat have teamed up with Chicken Lips singer Jonny Spencer for an EP of deviant, darkly surreal and thoroughly epic house music, including the long-awaited release of Andrew Weatherall favourite ‘Dragging In The Mud’.
The EP, which will be released on Munich’s Compost Records (Compost Disco), comprises two original tracks from Velmondo - known for his work on John Talabot’s Hivern Discs - and young producer Priorat, who debuted on the compilation Hivernation from the same label. The release includes ‘Dragging In The Mud’, which Weatherall played on his last NTS radio show before the much-loved DJ and producer’s tragic death.
The EP is completed with remixes by Barcelona’s Marc Piñol and Swiss duo In Flagranti. It will be released by Compost Disco on vinyl (12”) and digital on October 15th 2021.

Parma-based singer and songwriter Loreni’s released her synth-pop version in 2020 and here the always charming Mushrooms Project are joined by Deep88 to provide four subterranean reworks. Translated as ‘snow in May’, the song alludes to the confusing and unexpected times through which the world is currently living, and Loreni’s bittersweet vocals offer ample inspiration for the chosen remixers to work their respective magic here. Fellow Parma residents Marco and Girogio unite under their Mushrooms Project banner with three distinct interpretations.
The duo’s work is always immaculately formed, and here they open proceedings with their ‘Disco Maxi Single’ version, where throbbing synth bass and atmospheric waves are joined by crisp machine drums for a pulsating club workout. Their ‘Balearic’ mix finds them in familiar territory as they join Leo Almunia to compose a blissful soundtrack to immersive ocean-side reflections. As the name suggests, their ‘Rave’ version is designed for dubbed out dancefloors, with bass-heavy rhythm and wigged-out effects periodically lifted by dreamy chords and distantly gliding vocals. Finally, Alessandro ‘Deep88’ Pasini arrives with his authentic dream house version, with emotive pads caressing Loreni’s reverb-soaked vocals over a chugging four/four rhythm.

Guadalajara-based DJ, producer and visual artist Alf Champion gears up for the release of his debut LP Sour N Sweet on Funcanglong Files, the label he co-helms with fellow Mexican producer Mufti. With releases and tracks under his belt on the likes of Optimo Music, New Day Everyday and Electric Shapes, he now turns his attentions to his first fully realised records, taking us on a ride through sounds to tantalise your tastebuds, from psychedelic slow burners to guitar-saturated electronica and off kilter club music.

Mexico City resident La Guardia De La Luz is back on Hell Yeah with a new three-track EP, The Magnetic Field, a perfect follow-up from his Awakenings EP back in late 2021. 

This Balearic-not-Balearic artist has been crafting his seductive sounds for many years. From lush deep house to stoner dub via psychedelic beats, he can do it all with a majestic sense of storytelling. This time out he has his sights set firmly on the dance floor as he mixes up breakbeat, reggae and disco. 

'Kingston Technologies' has an irresistibly wiggling dub rhythm. Dusty breakbeats and digi-synths dance around one another as warm chords and jah-inspired vocals drift up top. It's a super fresh tune that sounds like nothing else out there. 

The epic ten-minute workout that is 'Planetary' builds on deep-cut house drums with funky bass playing and louche percussion. It's an early evening classic that will see any floor slowly fill up as people shake their booty to the loose rhythm and get lost in the soulful melodies that grow ever more cosmic. 

Finally, the title track is another nearly 10-minute masterpiece with silky star-gazing arps circling up through the mix over lazy breaks. It's an expansive track with a widescreen design that has you gazing off to the distance and lost in a loved-up deep disco reverie. 

These are three inventive tunes that take you to another world.

What attracts us to Chilean-born artist Ricardo Tobar is the notion of intersection, and although fusion is nothing new, as a concept it will always pull our heartstrings. Applying influence is amateur, we see this over and over again as we endure trend-driven appropriation of cultures the world over, but the epiphany when an artist finds true synergy between heritage and influence is a pivotal moment that the inspired will seek, even though it may take the length of one’s career to behold. As pretentious as that may sound, it is precisely the hybrid born from that place of intersection that excites us at the ESP Institute, the “A plus B that equals 3”. We hear this in Ricardo’s music — the Latin American instinct in his drums and percussion, sometimes tightly aligned with body movements and other times hauntingly mis-aligned and chaotic, intersects with his rock influence of ethereal (micro) melodies that slowly layer and layer until we’re climbing a glorious (macro) wall of sound — but most importantly we hear where these different parts of his life come together to further create one unique voice. On both sides of his ESP Institute debut 'Liturgia', Tobar couples one pulsing dance-driven track with another atmospheric and immersive track, requiring we educate ourselves in the polarity of this language he’s building, one that will expand to tell a broader story later this year with his debut album.
