Collection of lo-fi field recordings made during ethnographic study of vernacular photography in the border villages in the northwest Ukraine (Volyn Oblast).

Series of audio-documentation of the daily sounds that accompanied me all 14 days fieldwork.

The Background of Ethnographic Fieldwork

Morning sounds in a motel room near the Kyiv-Warsaw highway. Mix of singing rooster and other birds with the traffic noise.

6:30 a.m. in the motel room

Sounds of various cars. Singing birds in the background. Recorded on the Kyiv-Warsaw highway near Luboml.

7:48 a.m. kyiv-warsaw highway traffic noise

(Probably) real time waiting for marshrutka. Traffic Noise. Sound of human footsteps.

8:00 a.m waiting for the marshrutka

Local radio station is playing in the background. Passengers sarcastic talk about money. Mix of different voices. Phone call ringtone. Vibrating sounds of potholes on the road.

8:33 a.m. inside the marshrutka

Calming night sounds. Crickets chirp and pleasant silence. Background mix of dogs barking and traffic noise.

8:57 p.m. evening returning to motel through the cemetery and highway

Deep vibrating sounds of traffic noise. Weird background.

Andrew Bez reincarnates the old Ukrainian radio, which broadcasted across the country by wires. A small plastic radio device was usually hang up in every kitchen and broadcasted news, shows and music non-stop from 6:00 till midnight. That's why people called it "chatterbox".
One day, Andrew installed his own (fake) radio in his kitchen made of an old laptop, cheap small speakers and special equalisation to simulate the old radio sound. That's how the idea of ​​this radio show appeared.

“This show is not only created to entertain you with cool tunes. But first of all - to create an imaginary space and time in which the old Ukrainian radio continues to be oldy and at the same time relevant for all categories of citizens.”
