With the ubiquity of DJ mixes on the net, we have become somewhat used to the short 1-2 hour format. But what about an opportunity to have the DJs show you what they really are about? Say, covering a musical topic, a whole era of sound, or just the kind of records they feel to truly represent their full musical identity! - For this we still need go out to clubs, trying to occasionally find DJs being given all the time to really dig deep in their vaults.

But unless gifted with local and logistical possibility, one rarely finds these treats. Which is why we at Archive aim to give you exactly that: unadulterated live-recordings from some of the scenes most respected members, showing you what they really care about.

Up next we have a special live take recording from about a year ago. A frosty Toronto off location in February, with Roy Davis (@roydavisjr) bringing the soulful heat.

The acclaimed and seasoned veteran producer steps up to deliver 90 minutes of what he himself once coined „soul electrica“. It’s soul music essentially, with all the ins and outs and lots of strong black voices. 

Born and raised in California, young Roy Davis Jr. moved to Detroit early on and got introduced to dance in the late 80’s already. Joining the legendary production outfit „Phuture“, he soon moved on to follow his mentor DJ Pierre to New York, where he worked both producing and as A&R for Strictly Rhythm.

This mixtape sees him moving effortlessly between the different strains of house, all of which he had a hand in shaping over the last decades. Daring to take the occasional left turn, all is held together by the essential funk that runs deep in his veins. Beware though - with its constant changes in rhythm and nifty transitions through a myriad of different percussive styles strewn throughout, this is by no means your typical house mix!
