This whole album is pretty much beautiful

I use sound as a way to express my healing process, accept reality, and find beauty in life's unpredictability. In its raw and unfiltered form, sound serves as a powerful medium for conveying the complex emotions I experience while navigating life's chaos and uncertainty. By embracing disharmony and unexpected shifts in my music, I am not only accepting reality as it is, but also transforming it into something meaningful and intimate for me. This creates a space where vulnerability and acceptance coexist, allowing me to find love and beauty in the imperfect and even the disturbing.

Still and sound

Sitting here, like yesterday, like tomorrow, every day. Sitting. With the world in hand and not one second more than anyone else.

Sat at the desk, the table, the computer, on the bench I put in my bathroom for when the pain is too heavy, on the bed when it was too hard to get up yesterday, tomorrow, every day. I always chose the same seat, the same self checkout, the same breakfast, the same lunch and dinner. I don’t have more minutes than any of you.

I sit and I watch all I can, I get up just to sit back down, I get up yesterday, tomorrow, every day. It’s all good, I can do it, I’m here to feel it all, every hour I check in with the world and I, and I, and I manage to stay present, in this moment and the last one we shared, just past midnight.

Even if it wasn’t worth it in the end. You experienced it. That’s all it is. That’s all there was required of you. You just didn’t know it, wondering why you saw the blank paged months stack up when everyone seemed so busy. So busy yesterday, tomorrow, everyday, not a single open book all year around. A whole life buried under the weight of time, running after something that was never meant to matter.

But at least the pixels on the screen were bigger than the previous quarter.

‘Sleeplaboratory1.0’ is a sixteen track cross section of modern Ambient artists touching on everything from minimalist drone and modern classical cinematics to electro acoustic and synth influenced works. It is released in a run of 100 physical copies, as we’ve chosen to create a ‘gatefold LP’ styled CD package, complete with beautiful artwork provided over 4 panels by our regular collaborator Federica Jeanne de Luca. The album is also available digitally in a range of formats, carefully mastered by Tim Diagram who also contributes a track as Maps and Diagrams. 

This album is intended as a relaxing companion for either conscious or sub-conscious listening, with contributing artists briefed to create something vacant which is likely to induce sleep. Harry selected the artists with the theme in mind and to help them understand his vision, he shared a link to Janek Schaefer’s ‘Lay-by Lullaby’ released on 12k back in 2014. It is an album which has been a huge part of his personal sleep routine, with him playing it at low volume on his iPod in bed ever since it was released so it seemed to be the perfect starting point. 

Harry’s motivation behind creating this sleepy album was primarily due to his fascination on the relationship between Ambient music and sleep: Robert Rich, Max Richter and Tanner Menard all performed notable sleep concerts for starters. Harry was particularly honoured when Janek Schaefer agreed to provide the opening track to this accumulation of calming works and it was he that introduced the National Geographic edition at the time which had a large article about the science of sleep and how it sits in modern society. 
Additionally, Harry was expecting the arrival of his first child during the production stages of Sleeplaboratory1.0 and he wanted the album to be particularly calming for babies. 

We will not make any recommendation on how our listeners might best enjoy this record and so it’s down to you to choose the best environment to listen, whether this be late at night with headphones, on a loud system or perhaps played through Bluetooth speakers in and around your home.

Deep Phase

Swedish artist Mikael Lind, is well known in the ambient scene for his works for Morr Music, Time Released Sound or more recently Polar Seas Recordings. 'Contingencies' is his first release on Archives, after an appearance on our last compilation 'Solstice'. The pieces on the album are part of his experimentation on live improvisations with different pianos.

During the album recording sessions, I limited myself to a certain setup: electric guitar, looper, delay/reverb pedal, and a 4-track portable tape recorder. This helped me to concentrate on expressing the moods instead of being distracted by the necessity of choosing the instrument and timbre. Each track was a result of a single recording session. By means of sound, I tried to express some sort of a “stream” feeling; that’s why it was important to me to stay in this state myself, not to ruin the general picture and make the album as solid as possible.
