The Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Studies (SALISES) presents the first in a series of radio programmes that examine pertinent periods in our history as Caribbean people. As Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago celebrate their 50th year of political independence, SALISES looks back on the failed West Indies Federation (1958 - 1962), of which both counties were foundation members. 
 
In this programme, we hear excerpts from a debate between members of the Jamaica Labour Party and the People's National Party in Jamaica, shortly before a referendum on Federation in 1961. We feature also clips of Professor A.P Thornton former HOD of History at The University College of the West Indies, as he highlights some of the principles and problems within a federal system of government. We also play politically significant Calypso songs from artiste such as The Mighty Sparrow.
