Rob Hes has been a busy man… In the six months since the Dutch artist last flexed his tools of the trade on
SCI+TEC he’s dented discographies with slick physical grooves on KD Raw, Elevate, Tronic and My Favourite
Freaks. For good reason; he’s cooking up some high grade techno right now.
Now back on Dubfire’s imprint, it’s yet another late night crusade into the unknown. ‘Skin Deep’ sets the scene
with a soaring hook that rises and rises relentlessly, constantly mutating to create an ultimately psychedelic
effect. A classic gear-shifter; energy and intensity levels are guaranteed to raise several levels when you drop
this.
‘The Interview’ flips Rob’s sonic coin for a much creepier saga. After the smouldering, tripped-out intro, we’re hit
with a mutant acid arpeggio that stalks amid a heavily stretched humanoid texture before melting into a
breakdown of mind-melting proportions. True dark room dynamite.
Two more critical constructions from a consistently on-point man who’s fast-becoming a regular on the
SCI+TEC rollcall. Who knows how many other discographies or playlists he’ll dent before he returns again?

Following their collaborative debut ‘Oblivion’ on Digweed’s Bedrock last October, the duo have consequently shelled us with deep, immersive late night delights. First, they encouraged us to ‘Wake Up’ on Yousef’s Circus Recordings, then they joined forces with the Bedrock boss and Nick Muir and we were all transfixed by the ‘Close Your Eyes’ project, (a release which hit number one in the Beatport Progressive Chart and is still climbing the Beatport Techno Chart). Now they present another sense-startling slice... this time on one of the most iconic UK electronic indies of all time, Platipus, and they’re rolling deep in esteemed remix company. 

Entitled ‘Pukwudgie’, once again it’s oceanic in its sense of depth and scale. Rippling, warm, full of surprises, just on the right side of trippy and hypnotic and ultimately timeless, ‘Pukwudgie’ captivates, and is as rich as the folklore that inspired the title. The same can be said for the remixes; Italian stallion Gai Barone tessellates the patterns with an epic nine minute odyssey that’s drenched in a soaking wet bassline and offers more twists than a plate of spaghetti while Barry Jamieson dives to even deeper depths with a ten minute opus that breaks down into the realms of delicate classic piano before gradually building up again. His years behind the scenes working with Sasha and Charlie May shining through his deft grasp of restraint and subtlety, he brings this pivotal release to a fitting and poignant end. Time to spread the word.

German producer Modeplex makes a strong entrance on Steyoyoke with his EP “Kronos Pearl”, a determined and refined 3-track release.

The first track, “Jupiter”, wastes no time establishing the tone, pairing a heavy bassline with distinctive overlaid melodies. It’s versatile, compelling, and makes claim to a place in any techno set.

The title track, “Kronos Pearl”, is a darker piece, combining heavy synths with more experimental sound effects. Driven forward by variations on a common melodic theme, the track fluctuates its focus between higher and lower elements before leading us steadily on to the next track in the EP.

“Hourglass” shows another, more experimental side to the producer – the track follows a pattern of sections that have a layered build and release, falling away to quieter, pared-back interludes. It makes great use of the shifting of moods over time, as each section adds something new whilst pushing and stretching themes that have gone before.

This is an impressive debut on Steyoyoke for Modeplex, showing their versatility not only musically but conceptually. These tracks are strong pieces in their own right, and together show that there is a lot more to come from this producer.

Following on from the last “Live in Tokyo” compilation, John Digweed's next album acts as a celebration but also a landmark release. Output in Brooklyn has been one of the shining lights in clubland with its forward thinking policies and attention to detail with mind blowing sound and lighting. Having been a regular behind the decks since it opened and having released a “Live in Brooklyn” album over 2 years ago you could say I have a real love for this space. When it was announced that the club was closing and I would be playing the very last set there I had so many mixed emotions from sadness to joy and an overwhelming pressure to deliver a party that a club of that stature deserves. I really put my heart and soul into that party drawing from my favourite tracks over the years.

The set seemed to fly by and there was just a constant sea of smiling faces from the dance floor all night long as the crowd literally savoured every record on that crystal clear sound system.  After listening back to the set I knew this album had to come out and not just be another mix online. It deserved to be part of peoples music collection and a memento for years to come. We have managed to licence 6 cd’s worth of music from the night.  I hope you can immerse yourself in one of my favourite sets in NY for years.
