5. Recognising signs 
We need to work together to stop young people sniffing fuel and other substances. 

There are some signs you can look for to tell if someone you know might be sniffing. 

If you see empty containers around that smell like petrol 

If there is a fuel smell on clothes

They have spots or sores around their mouth and nose

They look drunk or are staggering

Or if their behaviour, the way they act has changed.

This could be that they are tired all the time

Missing school or other activities 

Not eating much and getting really skinny

Getting angry, violent or grumpy often. 
When you see these changes, talk to the person about it and listen to their answer. 

These changes might be from something else. Let them know that you are there to help them whatever the problem is.

 Talk to them without yelling because that person needs to trust you to let you help them. 

We can work together, as families and communities to stop this sniffing problem and give our children a healthy and happy future.

Andrew Gurruwiwi Show - Eylandt Band (Groote Eylandt)

This 9 part radio series explores the history and current status of ‘Raypirri’ often referred to as discipline but encompassing the raising of Yolŋu children to become good responsible members of society. The senior elders involved reflect on their own experiences growing up in the 1950’s, 60’s and 70’s, and discuss the influencing factors that have contributed to these processes changing through the decades. They share their insights on the situation today and the difficulties that parents face in raising and disciplining children and the consequences currently faced in relation to health and wellbeing. The series concludes with discussions around strategies for ensuring that young people learn and grow their knowledge of culture, law, land, kinship, traditional food, music and craft which leads to the development of respectful, responsible, healthy members of society that will keep their culture and language strong for generations to come.
