Caitlin Medcalf’s love for music runs deep. 

As a DJ, producer, journalist, radio host and the former managing editor of renowned Australian outlet, Purple Sneakers, Caitlin’s tastemaker status was cemented with a breakout performance at Boiler Room x Lost Sundays. Drop the pressure, indeed.

Featuring the likes of Special Request, Shanti Celeste, India Jordan and Kettama, the Sydney-based selector delivers a mix full of passion, energy and finesse. 

In her own words:
“I had to open the mix with ‘Capitulation’ from Adam Pits. From the moment I heard it, I went back and hit play again and then again maybe 4 or 5 times. The way he plays with volume, dynamics and space throughout the track was what initially grabbed me, but every listen reveals something new.

Human Movement’s remix of Pretty Girl’s ‘Sun Phase’ (via Eora label Gallery Recordings) has been on repeat this past week. The first HM track I heard was ‘5AM’ maybe 5 years ago, and it’s been sick to see Eddy’s come up as a producer, particularly since going solo. The music he makes really resonates with me as both a producer and a DJ, especially because there are so few Aussie producers making music that so overtly draws from 90’s UK rave.

Midway through the mix is an artist called Pagan I recently discovered scrolling through Bandcamp. I couldn’t help but play nearly the whole track.  That booming vocal stab paired with the delicate harp creates such an impactful contrast.  He’s on the come up hard, getting played by some of my favourite artists like DJ Boring, Breaka, Denham Audio, and X-Coast!

Finally, there’s ‘Take Me Away (XTC Come Hard Mix)’ from Mix Factory. The original 1993 release has six different mixes, but this one hits the hardest for me. I’m constantly blown away by the simple yet impactful combination of soaring vocals, lush pads, gentle piano stabs and shuffling breakbeat. It’s blissful and euphoric in the best way possible. I’m itching to hear it on a big system in a sweaty club.” -- Caitlin Medcalf

We celebrate 100 mixes with a local star on the rise. Sam Alfred is a relatively new name to the scene; however, he is making a name for himself through the sort of high-quality productions you would expect from a 20-year veteran. Local label Love Above Records recently signed his debut, a six-track EP filled with house of various shapes and forms. It's a definitive statement of a promising future. On this mix, he only strengthens his reputation with an uplifting and energetic set that should cure any lockdown blues.
